Vasectomy on the NHS

HI there,
well, dh was meant to have sorted this over the past few years via the army, but well...it never happened...!
He will be out of the Army in April and obviously will then get registred with a NHS GP.
Does anyone know if it is very difficult to get a Vasectomy on the NHS and how long the waiting time is?
I have had different probs with different kind of contraception, and tbh, we have 3 children, dh will be 40, I am 38 this year and am planning on starting a degree this september...so, we definitely don't want no more children...!
So, anyone know, if this will be a fihgt or relatively easy?

At his age and with 3 children, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

loopylou6 · 29/02/2008 20:44

have u read my threads 3anm? we are going through the same situation at the mo, and fwiw i dont think u will have probs getting the op and according to my doc the waiting lists arnt that long now as the nhs is trying to snip waiting lists

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 29/02/2008 20:44

My hubby had his within 2 months of asking for it. Told waiting list was long but it wasn't.

emma1977 · 29/02/2008 20:46

Should be a doddle as long as you have both thought it through and are in agreement. I suggest you go along together for the GP appointment, as some GPs will only agree to refer if they have conformed that you are both in agreement.

Waiting lists vary a lot between areas. You will wait no longer than 13 weeks for the initial appointment with the surgeon, and then hopefully no longer than 6 months after that. Locally, wating times for vasectomy are 6-8 weeks from the time of the surgical appointment.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 29/02/2008 20:47

I wouldn't both go unless you are already not going to work that day. Didn't even need to see me. GP asked DH if I agreed and that was that.

3andnomore · 29/02/2008 20:51

Sounds all very promising.
And loupy, yes, just read your ranting thread about the gp that should just butt out...

Well, as for dh, it was originally his idea in the first place, he said it as soon as ds 3 was born...but at the time, I didn't want to make a decision, as I was pretty traumatised from ds3 birth and also all those Babyhormones...I wanted to be sure that I made the decision for the right reasons...my ys is now 3, well, 4 in the summer, and I am most definitely sure.
Am peed off with dh for not getting his backside into gear to organise it already, but he says he is definitely happy to have it done...well, and as I had such bad probs with my last pill, I have taken myself off it and basically told dh that until he had a vasectomy there will be no sex...lol...

Almost identical situation to Nab,
dh 38, 2 dc , Dr didn't need to see me at all just took dh word that i was in agreement, carrid out 3 months after 1st consultation.

We've only got one child and DH was only 34 when he had it done but we got it with no problem at all.

One appointment with our GP to request it, another with the GP who was going to carry out the procedure at his practice (where he paid lip service to "offering counselling") and then one more appointment at which the deed was done. Simple and simply fantastic!

Blimmin' hell - in my book the NHS should be positively encouraging it!

It's so liberating for women - as far as I'm concerned if you're sure you've finished your family it's the only form of contraception to use!!

UniversallyChallenged · 01/03/2008 21:54

nab - how long was dh off work and in pain for? Or anyone else whose OH has had it done?

bubblepop · 02/03/2008 09:06

hiya, we waited about a year for him to have it done..he was home the same day,had to take paracetamol for a couple of days. he went back to work after about 3 days

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 02/03/2008 18:51

IIRC he had it done on a Wed and had Thurs and Friday odd and went back to work on Monday. He sat with frozen peas on him for a while and I think it ached for a while.

Maidamess · 02/03/2008 18:53

My husband requested being put on the cancellation list so if a space came up he could have it done quicker. I don't know if that applies in your area, but they basically phoned him on the Monday and he was in the next day!

dosydot · 02/03/2008 20:41

My dh had complicatons and was off work for a month, couldn't drive and nearly ad to have further surgery.
but he would still recommend it to others as his complications were rare and he said the actual procedure was not too bad.

UniversallyChallenged · 03/03/2008 13:00

thanks for the info - dh's excuses now not looking to good -"ooh we cant afford for me to be off work for ages"

3andnomore · 03/03/2008 14:47

thanks all for the Info...

No. DH got an appointment within 3 months of asking I think and had it done about a month after that.

expatinscotland · 03/03/2008 14:49

My BIL is in America, where time off from work is rare. He had it Friday at noon - half day off - and then was back at work on Monday.

Never looked back and is pleased with the results.

When my dad had it way back in the 70s, it was a much more invasive procedure, but not as invasive as my mother's csections, as he pointed out!
