Wisdom Tooth Removal Pain

Rockhopper81 · 24/08/2023 03:59

I had a lower wisdom tooth removed 8 days ago at a dental hospital under sedation, mostly because I struggle with the dentist from a sensory point of view, but also because the tooth was broken, it had extra roots, and the roots were close to the nerve.

It was fine, few stitches to close it, I had visible bruising and my jaw was warm to the touch for a few days, but that seems to have abated.

I noticed yesterday though that I seem to be having a resurgence of pain, particularly during the night and in the morning - I'm needing strong painkillers again (which is controlling it during the day) and my jaw is sore to touch in places again.

Is this usual with this type of extraction? I also wondered if it could be because I've 'stopped' after my nephews staying for a few days - I had to 'keep going' when they were here, so maybe now I can actually relax I'm acknowledging the pain?

I don't have a bad taste or temperature to indicate infection, and it's pretty late after removal to be dry socket anyway...

Oh, and some pain/discomfort in the ear on the extraction side, plus a headache (but I'm a 'headache-y' person anyway, so not as worried about that).

Did they not give you some information about what to expect and aftercare?

If it's not something you've been told to expect, you should talk to your dentist about it.

Devilsmommy · 24/08/2023 05:03

Are you allowed to put anything on it because oragel is amazing for severe toothache, numbs the area completely

VashtaNerada · 24/08/2023 05:35

I had an extraction recently (not a wisdom tooth) and they said that if the pain gets worse to get back in contact. I’d give the dentist a ring, it could potentially be an infection. My experience of dental pain is that nothing can distract me from it so it does sound like it got better then worse again.

Ive had 3 wisdom teeth and one next to one out within the last 2-3 years. One under sedation.

I would 100% call the dentist as 8 days is quite a while to still be in that much pain with it.
However, I noticed in the following days that if I didn't sleep propped up, then I would be in pain.

Hi, dental nurse here.

From what your describing it sounds like you have dry socket.
This is when the clot that is formed in the socket comes out and leaves the bone exposed, it can become very painful!

I would suggest that you call the dental hospital as there are ways they can treat dry socket.

I wouldn't put anything on it (bonjela, oragel) as it is still an open wound and this can cause further discomfort.

Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone for your advice - I slept propped up last night and it definitely hurts less this morning. I also wonder if I'm grinding my teeth or clenching my jaw? I know I've done it before.

I'll give the dental hospital a call anyway to be on the safe side - worth checking.

Thanks again. Smile

Hi.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed during one surgery. I like you had bruising on my face afterwards. My face was also a little swollen, and there was some pain.

However, the pain went after a few days and there was no resurgence.

I guess being busy could take your mind off the pain, but if I was you, I'd go back to your dentist and make sure there is no infection or another problem there.

Surgery doesn't come without risks, however small the surgery is.

Hope you feel better soon.

@Rockhopper81 what antibiotics did they give

It was Amoxicillin - needed two full days worth to start to feel relief, but they did work. I thought it might be Metronidazole (I've had that before for a dental abcess), but not this time. 🙃

@Rockhopper81 im
8 days in and have the same I went on Wednesday and he said not infected but my jaw aches and I can barely open it fully was it same for you

Rockhopper81 · 06/10/2023 22:47

Dentist looked in my mouth (obviously), and also felt under my jaw/my neck, and said my 'glands were up'. Opening my mouth was painful and I was back to very soft foods.

I would go back - the fact you can't open your mouth fully needs looking at. I actually had my appointment on a Saturday - could you ring your dentist tomorrow and ask for an appointment? Or try 111 for an out-of-hours dentist over the weekend?
