... am I right in thinking that this could be a fresh infestation of headlice? They are on her scalp, and weren't there yesterday.

Head lice eggs attach to hair, they are shiny and very tiny, not direclty on scalp.

tiny black specks on scalp can be headlice poo

the eggs are brown (unhatched) or pale (hatched) and are small sesame seed shaped things attached at an angle to the hair shaft. You can't knock them off with finger or by blowing.

Alternatively she may have been playing in a dusty place.....dirt!

wet comb with conditioner and a bug busting comb - that will answer your question

Eww, thank you!

Dd had headlice when she was a few months old, she acquired them from playgroup. I'll never forget the horror of looking down and seeing a fully grown creepy crawly moving in her hair
I just couldn't remember what the rest looked like!

I used an electronic lice comb this evening, but that hasn't found any eggs or lice (yet). I'll have a go with the wet combing in the morning.

On closer inspection, ds has got the same dark specks on his scalp too. They both go to the same school, but are unlikely to have been in the same places today.

I've just noticed that DS has small, brown spots on his scalp. He's 3.4 and he's never had them before. He attends a nursery for 12.5 hrs a week where apparently there has been an outbreak.

But these are on his scalp. It's more like cradle cap (silly I know, for his age) then lice.

I'll keep an eye on it, though.
