I have had a dodgy thyroid for 20 years. I'm on hrt and anti depressants. My main problem though is my complete lack of energy. I am constantly at the gp/having blood tests but never get a diagnosis. I eat healthily, drink water, exercise etc etc but makes not a jot of difference. Spoke to dr about me/long covid which she said is a possibility and will refer me to me clinic if next set of tests inconclusive. I've been dragging myself through the day and also sub consciously having 'rest days' for years now but nothing seems to help. I'm constantly in tears and came home from work yesterday as couldn't keep my eyes open. Just feeling desperate and am only 50. Anyone any words of wisdom? Tia

Have you tried magnesium and vitamin b complexes?
I have long covid and have found they help ease the fatigue slightly. I also take Q10 which helps mitochondria

Greedybilly · 22/08/2023 20:50

Yes I take every vitamin going. (Not tried q10 though). Thanks good to know it helps you.

Assume Iron levels are OK?

Babyluigi · 22/08/2023 20:52

Have you had your B12 tested because your symptoms sound a lot like mine when I had a deficiency. Especially the brain fog/memory

Greedybilly · 22/08/2023 20:53

Yep I have had all the standard blood tests done many times and everything comes back fine - apart from thyroid which is easy to tweak. It's so frustrating

Have you had your ferritin levels checked?

Greedybilly · 22/08/2023 21:02

Is ferritin the same as iron? If so yes fine. Thanks though

I’m going to sound like a broke record. ( that’s what people tell me ). I had crushing fatigue, brain fog. Thought it was the start of perimenopause. I then came down with a bad gallbladder and had to change my diet.

I now don’t eat anything that is over 3% fat. So basically healthy foods and no junk food , biscuits crisps etc. the brain fog and the fatigue has gone. Gone completely. I always read about sugar and junk food and how it can affect u but I truly didn’t believe it. I do now.

Greedybilly · 22/08/2023 21:12

Interesting.... did you give up wheat as well as sugar??

I was already gluten and dairy free anyway becuase if my ibs. I didn’t really notice a difference on things when I did they other then my stomach not hurting anymore.

Bananas1350 · 23/08/2023 10:07

There is alot about sugar spikes and what foods make u feel like this that I have learnt in the last few months. I watched a lady on the you tube channel called the diary of a ceo. The title of it is 10 sugar hacks so u can eat what u want.

that really helped me in terms of hunger pains and what made my blood sugar drop.

it’s interesting as not all food is equal to other people in terms of what makes u spike. So that was good to learn that. That has stopped my blood sugar levels going really high. Which in term stopped the hunger. But then when I stopped the junk food the tiredness stopped as well. Felt better more energy etc. it is a hard diet to do though. As everything I have is under 3% and cheating only leads to pain.

but in the back of this we have changed as a family in terms of the amount of ultra processed food we have. And cook more from scratch. And both my husband and my son say they feel better.

i sound like one of those food gurus when I talk about this. But honestly. It is a real eye opener once u start looking into and feeling the changes that I had. I would get to the point where I would be so tired in the afternoons I physically wouldn’t be able to put one foot in front of another and always napped. I don’t get that anymore. Also. Lost half a stone fairly quickly without even thinking.

Sugar made me feel like this, I have a sweet tooth and after years of thinking it was iron, gluten etc.. i read about sugar and cut it out for a few weeks and my life completely changed, it took a few days for my body to adjust but cutting out sugar completely worked for me, I now have sugar back in my diet but not too often! Obviously it might not be usage related for you but I’d try and cut out different food groups for a couple of weeks at a time and see if you have any luck

Ineedwinenow · 23/08/2023 10:12

Usage related? I meant relevant 😆

I second the supplements and especially pre/probiotics! My overall mood and health greatly improved once I started paying more attention to my gut health as the gut and mental health are so very linked. I have so much more energry all around.

Also, I don't know if the seasons affect you at all but my hayfever this year has been insane feels like a constant cold with headaches/brain fog, low energy, generally feeling unwell.. all things that can be mistaken for other things so it might be worth looking into :)

Have you tried testosterone alongside your HRT?

Your GP is unlikely to be helpful here. You may need to ask (or pay) to see a menopause specialist.

Thanks all for your thoughts- really appreciated. X
