Odd blood pressure results - high diastolic and small difference

I am 40 with diagnosed high blood pressure for a year, taking 7.5mg of Ramipril. My bp is usually fine now, but the last week or so, I've noticed some odd numbers, especially when the medication is beginning to wear off.

This morning's average is 112/88. The diastolic is too high, but also the difference between the two is also very narrow. I've googled and read that this is a sign of heart failure or a heart condition, which has terrified me. The numbers are not always like this, but have been a few times recently.

I have an appointment for an annual review at the end of the month so I can ask then, but wondered if anyone has had similar, please?

BP goes up and down that's why it's important to take an average and take it 3x each time you take up.

Speak to your GP and stop googling, I know it's scary but sounds fine x

I’m a HCP and wouldn’t look twice at that BP.

My GP was completely unfazed when I sent several varied BP readings including some similar to yours.

Never heard about numbers close together being a sign of heart problems.

Tilllly · 19/08/2023 14:51

Aaaand breathe

It's fine
That's a decent reading

BP isn't an exact science and it varies

Are you breathless? Exhausted? Ankles / legs swelling? If not, please relax, you're fine 😊

Individual reading are less important than the longer term profile. Do 2xcheck morning and evening for two weeks and see how it averages out. Then you can have a chat with your GP to see what they think about the situation.

Thank you all for your reassurance and helpful answers. I will keep doing the morning and evening readings to get the 7 day average, and then speak to the GP at my annual review.

I so hate doing my blood pressure - even at home, it makes me so anxious. Recently a different GP told me to stop measuring as it was causing me too much panic, but the annual review means I need to do it for this week. Thank you again for calming me down!

Pleased you feel a bit calmer OP, was just going to echo others and say that I don't think the reading you say here is of any concern. Hopefully the annual review with confirm all is well 😊 have a nice evening and please try not to worry 😊

I've had similar readings and like you, I googled and freaked out. Had my heart checked out and it was fine. I would just ask your GP that they think, but don't panic.

Cheseandpickle · 23/08/2023 20:07

Thank you all again. In case anyone is still reading, I finished the week's form and the average was 116/86. It was one of those forms where you just record the first two results, which I find frustrating, as other times I've been sent a form where you just record the lowest of the first three. These obviously give different and better results!

I'm less worried about the small gap between the numbers now, but I am concerned that my diastolic is too high. I was told it should be below 85 at home. Can they give me extra medication for this, though, or would it lower the systolic too much?

Have you got thyroid issues?

My diastolic has just gone up and I think it's due to the hypothyroidism, after doing a bit of googling. Started on Ramopril too.

I also get white coat syndrome at home, so been doing a lot of relaxation/breathing/calm stuff as advised by the GP.

Cheseandpickle · 23/08/2023 20:49

@Spottywombat Thank you for your reply.
No, I had my thyroid checked at the end of last year, and it was fine. I absolutely have white coat syndrome at home as well though - and because I know the GP form focuses on the second result, that's always the one that's higher 🙄.

Oddly, it seems to be my diastolic that's affected more by being anxious now, though. My systolic is always ok. That's what's worrying me.

I don't know @Cheseandpickle but I'm similar. Cardiologist didn't seem concerned. Let us know what GP says?
I wouldn't panic though. You're only one point over 85! It's not like you're sky high or anywhere near that.
