Palpitations- anxiety or a problem with actual heart?

I’ve been having palpitations. A sort of awful, irregular, dragging pounding feeling.

I think it’s probably anxiety and would find it beyond embarrassing to go to the doctor/A&E for them to say it’s anxiety.

DP says maybe it’s a proper heart thing and I need to get it looked at.

WWYD?

I would go to my GP to rule out heart problems - it's important to treat that, especially if you have kids to take care of.

If it's anxiety instead, then I would focus on treating that.

Whichever it is, if you've got kids that are dependant on you, you need to know.

Yes, we do have two quite young DC.

DP points out that I have a very low threshold for getting other things checked out, but have a bit of a block about this.

Go... To... A... Doctor. Jesus. I have anxiety and would definitely be asking to be checked if I experienced what you've put. They're literally paid to make sure you're ok! Think of your children!

Just go. It’ll put your mind at rest. Or save your life. Either way totally worth following doctors orders.

I have palpitations. I got checked out by the GP when they started to rule out anything sinister.

They are scary but often benign. That being said, you should still see a doctor.

Yes, I do have anxiety but am pretty good at managing it. I don’t avoid things, I manage everything pretty well etc. But it’s there in the background which is what makes me think it’s just that.

One of our DC is quite challenging (suspected ASD) and our recent holiday was a bit of a disaster. I’ve been putting it down to thwt.

Get checked over. Set your mind at rest. Ish. (Is our mind ever at rest?)

Get it checked out I spent 7 years disagreeing with and anxiety and panic attack diagnosis. Turns out I have a heart condition. It is probably anxiety but if it is heart related the earlier it discovered the easier it is to treat

Diddykong · 18/08/2023 22:37

Definitely get checked just in case. I get palpitations with too much caffeine though.

AndrewGarfieldsLaptop · 18/08/2023 22:40

I have palpitations and it's down to 2 factors; low iron and anxiety.

I have regular cardiac ultrasounds as I have "broken heart syndrome"

Winnipeggy · 18/08/2023 22:46

What happens to your heart rate during the palpitations? Any way of tracking it?

Costacoffeeplease · 18/08/2023 22:59

Palpitations are also a menopause symptom. Are you anywhere near peri/menopause?

Mine started in my mid 40s, my mum the same. I take a beta blocker to stop them but the cardiologist said my heart was fine

Thelifeofawife · 18/08/2023 23:52

It could just be anxiety but it could be more so do get it checked out.
I kept ignoring mine then one day it was so bad I went to A&E. They did lots of checks and I was fine, it helped reassure me and not one healthcare professional made me feel like I had wasted their time.
