Hi Lil, poor you ? Perhaps a dummy ?

Tillysmummy · 22/11/2002 11:57

How much longer to go and what is the op for (if you don't mind me asking ?)

ScummyMummy · 22/11/2002 11:57

Oh Lil- what a nightmare. How old is baby? All I can think of are toys, cuddles, distracting attention by going into different rooms of the house/taking a walk outside. Or how about a dummy if she'd take one- maybe she'd feel like she was eating if she could chew on one?

I do hope the op goes well and will be thinking of you,

Lil · 22/11/2002 12:50

Dummy, wow, EXCELLANT idea, have never used one before, but now is definitely the time. dd 6 months, having a lung biopsy. She'll be in excellant hands, but I know I'm going to get all teary!! feel a right wuss. Guess nurses have seen it all before...

If she enjoys bath time how about trying that - might distract her. Hope everything goes OK

Tillysmummy · 22/11/2002 14:24

Good luck Lil, thinking of you.

Is even water allowed??? I don't know if your breastfeeding, Lil, but thought breastmilk was supposed to be treated almost like water. Some docs just assume one is formula feeding, which might really need a 6 hour lag time to clear out, but I thought human milk was more like 2-3 hours at most.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2002 15:17

If DD won't take the dummy, try a clean finger, nail-side down, pad to the roof of the mouth.

Good luck!

What time is the op Lil - hopefully they have put you down first thing? My ds had a hernia op at 16 months and required general anaesthetic The op was scheduled for 9am so I couldn't give him anything from 3am onwards. As he was still sleeping with me and breastfeeding I didn't know what to do. He had a feed at 4am then he slept till morning. I told them the next morning but they said not to worry as breastmilk is digested so quickly, like water.

Once he was up we quickly got him out of the house so he wasn't looking for a feed (he always loved being in the car) and then when we got to hospital the staff were fantastic.. bringing him toys and generally distracting him...

Good luck for the op

Hi Lil ... hope the op went well...
Sorry but I was too late for this thread so I was too late to help but just wanted to say that I know how you feel... and yes, nurses do have lots of experience in this sort of thing!

My DS had to go for 36 hours without a feed before his operation when he was 4 weeks old !!!!!!!!!! ... it was pure hell! It was such a long time because he was dehydrated and they wouldn't operate until his 'salts' and 'electrolytes' were back up to a certain level ...

All I could do was put my finger in his mouth and keep him close so that he felt that he was feeding even though he wasn't ... the nurses were great and would take him away every so often to give me a break, but eventually the poor little thing just gave up and slept for ages out of exhaustion!

Anyway ... let us know how the op went ...
