Quinsy 3 times in 3 months

Anyone got experience of this or know anything about it?

an on third hospital visit in 3 months due to the above. No Previous tonsillitis or anything like that but suddenly having massive issues in my 40s for no fathomable reason.

Going to push for urgent tonsilectomy but any other experience or knowledge welcome. I have no idea why this is happening :(

Oh I am sorry, I had it last year, it was so awful, you poor thing I do feel sorry for you. I was hospitalised and given IV antibiotics and IV steroids. They did tell me I could become susceptible to it and get it again, which has terrified me. Even on that first, and so far only episode, my tonsils were drained with a needle and I was told I probably would end up having to have them removed, so far it hasn't reoccurred though - the only thing I do is at the first twinge of a sore throat now, I gargle with warm salt water every hour until it disappears, I don't know if that's what's kept it at bay or I've just been lucky. Hope you feel better soon, quinsy is utterly miserable.

Thankyou. Tbh I can’t even claim a sore throat beforehand. It just seems to appear….

by The time dd has her tonsils removed she was getting tonsillitis every 3/4 weeks.

After they removed them they said they were very scared and hard to remove, and that infection can do this, cause scarring tissue where the bacteria ‘hide’ from the antibiotics until they can reproduce enough to make her ill again, hence being so cyclical.

Given the trauma the quinsy would have caused yours is likely a similar thing has happened, and that removal will be the only long term fix.

Hope you feel better soon, sounds awful

Rina66 · 17/08/2023 06:46

Perhaps that's relevant that you don't suffer with a sore throat beforehand?
I thought quinsy built up gradually from a sore throat or tonsillitis as the pus collects in the abscess and then it becomes harder to swallow. I also had a high temperature, sore neck and couldn't open my mouth properly.

Like PP by the time I had mine removed I was on antibiotics every 2 weeks it was awful! Push for having them out although I know they are reluctant to take them out now but if you're ending up in hospital every time that should help them decide to do it! I had mine out about 12 years ago and not been properly 'poorly' since, of course had the odd cold/chest infection but nothing that made me as poorly as the tonsillitis/quinsy use to make me. Not sure if it was just for me personally but I also use to find dairy use to make my throat worse when I had infection so milk for example use to fell like it was just sticking to my throat and making me not be able to swallow! If they do take them out and it's still the same rule of 'you need to eat a slice of toast before being allowed home' either try and get your painkillers in before breakfast or take a bag where you can hide it 😂 (yes I hid mine haha) xx

@Sssudio your suggestion makes sense and is what I think is happening here. The gaps are getting closer between each flare up.

@Rina66 i had symptoms/sore throat the first two times but what I mean is, it seems to be progressing more and more rapidly each time - this last time my throat felt a bit sore the morning but by lunchtime it was progressively worsening and I knew the quinsy was back. I was in hospital by the afternoon (yesterday) as I knew that the only solution was aspiration and IV drugs.

Oh, I see, that sounds like the infection is never going doesn't it? After my IV antibiotics in hospital, they gave me 10 day course of liquid oral antibiotics to take home. How long have your antibiotics courses been?

thinkkook · 17/08/2023 07:26

This happened to me some years ago. Never been so ill as the first one when no doctor knew what it was until the student doctor came along!

Anyway, it recurred twice quite soon after and they did then whip my tonsils out without a prolonged wait.

So there is hope for you. I hope they sort you soon, crossing my fingers for you as I know it's shit.

thinkkook · 17/08/2023 07:30

Should add I'd never had tonsillitis before and my second and third more or less just appeared overnight. As we knew what it was treatment came quicker which was something and I didn't need hospitalising like the first time.

Since having the tonsils removed I barely even get a cold when before I was quite susceptible. Not sure how that works though!

Ilikeviognier · 17/08/2023 07:31

@Rina66 10 days courses! So I’m not sure else they could give me. I worked out that I only finished the course for the last bout 10 days ago, so it’s definitely not getting shut of it properly. However I’m guessing the wait list for tonsils whipped out is not short. I do have private medical but even still….

@thinkkook i tried to avoid hospital with bout 2,but the regular antibiotics did nothing and the next day I was in a right state and ended up in hospital anyway. Mine doesn’t seem to go away without draining and iv drugs- hence causing huge life disruption. I also have two primary age kids and a busy job 🙈

My son had Quincy 3 times too. It was awful and came on very quickly with 2 xs A&E visits to have them drained (horrific for him!). After the 2nd time they referred him to ENT for a tonsillectomy but u fortunately the referral got 'lost'. After the 3rd time they got him in very quickly after the infection cleared and took his tonsils out. It's awful OP and hope you feel better soon.

Ilikeviognier · 17/08/2023 07:49

@Girlintheframe thanks - may be light at the end of the tunnel then!

I have Private Health too, when I contacted them thinking mine would need to come out, they said they could do it the following week! I'd probably go that route if I were you, I was told they would remove mine quickly on the NHS but only if they couldn't get the swelling down with antibiotics, the antibiotics worked for me thankfully but clearly you need further intervention. Hope you feel better soon, start the process x

Ilikeviognier · 17/08/2023 08:34

@Rina66 i had already booked myself in with a private consultant but he couldn’t get me in until early September - not sure how long it would be after to actually get the damn things out!
