Pernicious anemia And Anemia … what’s the difference

Sorry to come across dim but I can’t seem to find the answer on Google.

I recently had blood tests at the GP surgery.

It came back low for B12 (level was 72) Folate and Iron.

Iv been prescribed 6 B12 injections in a 2 week period and then one every 12 weeks for the rest of my life.

Iv also been given iron and folate tablets to take for 4 months once I have started getting the B12 injections (next week).

The doctors also requested a stool sample and more bloods for inflammation markers to see why my body is not absorbing what it should. I’m in my early 30s.

Now my GP just said I have anemia but when googling Pernicious anemia keeps coming up?

Is there much of a difference.

My B12 level was 72.

Hi all, wondering if anyone can help. I was diagnosed with PA today following bloods. I have been feeling tired etc but also have tingling in my hands and feet. I cannot start the injections for two weeks as I am on holiday next week and need the 6 doses within two weeks. Do you think this is ok to wait two weeks before starting them? I am worried because I have neurological symptoms and I don’t want them to get worse and be irreversible. Is two weeks a dangerous amount of time to wait?

I’m not medically trained but if your gp thinks it will be ok then hopefully it gives you reassurance. Maybe call on Monday and get a phone appointment to address your concerns so you can hopefully just relax on holiday?

@PanicAttax sorry your not 100% yet. We were having our injections at the same time. I didn’t have crippling fatigue before the injections but the initial 6 took it out of me! Feeling ok now but I hope as others say, the 3 monthly one has a kick!

I can't wait to have it then! I bought myself a vit D one as well and did feel better the day after that, which was just before the last B12. I do think often they don't boost other vitamins needed to make the one they top up work. I know I am also on the line for ferratin but despite me asking they aren't helping with that no idea why. It took me 2 months to get meds for the hyperthyroidism so it's not a huge surprise, but frustrating. I'm definitely better than I was but no where near normal. Funny how you notice the symptoms more as you get better though. I didn't care at all when I was super low, just actually thought it would be fine if everything just stopped. Scary looking back!

B12 injections can "hurt like hell" but they don't have to.
You need to be as relaxed as possible and you need to have the injection very very very slowly. I've had pain free B12 jabs if done slowly.
