DS has had diarrhoea for weeks now

He is nearly fourteen months. He's had diarrhoea and some vomiting on and off for three weeks. This current batch has been since last Wednesday and I am getting a bit desperate because DH and I are both having to take loads of time off work.

GP just said he was probably a bit lactose intolerant, cut out cows milk and see what happens. I've got some probiotic powder and I'm not giving him any dairy at all. He's very cheerful, he doesn't have a temperature and he's eating loads. What else can I do to get him better? Help!

Did it start after an illness or anything?

Has the GP taken a stool sample?

He and the other baby at his childminders both had a vomiting bug, that's when it started, and no the GP didn't take a stool sample.

Until this week it stopped when we didn't give him cows milk and then would start when we did (it took us a couple of goes to suss that pattern). He hasn't had milk now since Monday though and it's made no differenc

definitely time to go back to doctor - he could have a bug, could be intolerant of whatever you are giving him instead of cow's milk (I had a friend whose baby turned out to be intolerant of both cow and soya products - ok with goat though). But 3 weeks is too much, and personally i think 14 months is too young to just accept 'oh he's intolerant of dairy', it should be properly diagnosed

on stool samples, a tip (not everyone may wish to read on). you need to keep it fresh and warm (body temperature) if possible as some bugs are very temperature sensitive and some hard to detect, so the longer it can be kept 'fresh' the better!

Ah. How do you do that then? Tin foil to keep the hit in? I can't think of anything else

the doctor gave me a special sample tube for ds3 today. Do you know how much they need missing?

shreddies · 28/02/2008 16:30

sorry, meant heat in, not hit, but still a bit wide of the mark. special sample tube sounds much more like it

hey, i'm no expert - mine was an adult sample! (sorry if tmi) i guess a good teaspoonful? they dont need much. just wrap it in anything to keep it warmer for longer. this may be an old wives tale and the doctor may laugh!
