Cholesterol lowering diet has actually increased bad cholesterol!?

After a high cholesterol score my GP asked me to go on a low cholesterol diet. I read all the NHS guidelines and have followed it to the letter for the past eight weeks. I’ve lost 3kg which is great.

I’ve had another blood test and while my overall score has lowered from approx 7.5 to 6.4, to my shock and surprise, my GP has said my bad cholesterol has actually increased so I need to go on statins.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening before? Why might it have happened??

What was the diet? The NHS is often way behind current thinking for nutrition.

Well, not just NHS advice but BHF advice etc. Lowering saturated fats. More veg and fruit. Reduce sugar. More nuts!

Have you tried the diet from Heart.uk website i followed it around 90% for a few months later yeear and my bad cholesterol went down a lot, i tried to have around 15grams of saturated fats a day more or less

It's not just about diet. It's a hereditary condition. I guess the doctor or you on statins because the diet option wasn't working, but it might be worth trying the Zoe thing to see if that tells you more about yourself. No harm in eating healthily anyway too.

This is the Heart UK diet and exactly what I’ve been doing. It should work. It hasn’t worked. It’s actually made my cholesterol go up. I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Bumping as I would be very interested in hearing if a low cholesterol diet is actually had the opposite effect for anyone before!

Not quite your question, but I’m vegan and have high cholesterol. Mine was over 8 -I’m now on statins. It did go down but is creeping up again, even on statins. I eat no dairy, red or meat. Eat loads of veg. Only have whole grains. Drink no alcohol. Etc. Don’t use coconut oil or cream. I’m very slim and fit. All food is home-cooked. I was referred to a specialist lipid clinic at a hospital where they didn’t think I had familial high cholesterol, so I’m just baffled. There’s nothing else I can do, so I just take the statins.

I’m the same! Mine has been creeping up over the last two years. I went on a Draconian bender during the summer and got my results today- it has gone up again. Have seen a cardiologist who found nothing untoward d but now need a treadmill test. Heart disease in the family but not high cholesterol.
Feeling so discouraged. Am vegetarian, exercise every day but I am post menopausal. The cardiologist said she had a patient who spend six months in Senegal where she s am every day and six months in France when her cholesterol soared as she was not doing enough exercise.
She told me to walk/ cycle or swim for an hour a day.
