Cant wee properly after surgery, uti

I had surgery today, in hospital now and I’m so anxious. :( I’ve not been able to wee normally since the operation. Just a tiny drop at first but now smaller bits are coming out but not a normal wee. My bladder feels full. I have a mild uti (started taking nitrofurantoin since Tuesday eve). I’m so scared that the uti is going to spread, my temp has been on the high side, last reading was 37.7. I have been so anxious leading up to this surgery and it’s done and went well, but my worry is spiralling because of this. I keep asking the nurse but she says I need to keep trying to go. I’ve not eating much due to the GA making me feel so sick. Have had bladder scans and they said it’s not bad enough for a catheter, but I don’t know if that would make it worse anyway. I’m very worried. 😞

just to add it’s been 6 and half hours since I came out of surgery. The operation was in my back passage.

Oh op - take a breath. You sound very worried and that will not be helping. Are you able to get to the toilet alone and have you got to have assistance? Having someone with you won’t help you you to relax!
If you’re able, drink plenty and then go into the toilet, sit in the loo and relax, run the tap, don’t think about anything else except relaxing your body and breathing calmly.
Hopefully this will help but if not then speak again to the nurse. They can do another bladder scan to see if you’re retaining and can put a catheter in to ease the discomfort if you are.

I've had a surgery down there too. Surgeon told me the brain needs time to figure out where the organs are, because they may have been moved slightly during the surgery. Hopefully your urethra will kick in again soon. You can try leaning forward on the loo, or to one side or the other (hold onto something of course). And breathing with pursed lips as like through a straw to relax the muscles.

My bladder always goes to sleep after c sections. First was worse, but it will wake up eventually

Thanks for your replies. I am worrying too much i know, I am just scared if it turns into sepsis or something :( I realise I must sound neurotic. I’ve had bad past experiences with surgery/hospital, ectopic pregnancy gynae surgery, late miscarriage… all of which were traumatic and scary and I felt like I had no control. My husband is here but think he will have to go soon. Im too scared to sleep. Getting so upset.

Thank you for the suggestions. I’ve been trying all of these, just need to persevere. How long did it take for you to wee normally?

When I had surgery to repair my back passage, I wasn’t able to wee until I’d done it standing up in the shower while showering in warm water. I think the warm water helped me relax? In a way that sitting on the loo couldn’t.

TappingTed · 10/08/2023 22:54

Warm water poured over from a jug could help? Or peeing in a bath if they have one or a shower if you’re fit to? The bladder can go into shock from surgery… and it can be tensed up. Have you been written up for anything to relax you? Would having an i continence pad on help reassure you any and relax as you sleep?

Mimosa834 · 10/08/2023 23:04

I’m too nervous to sleep as I’ve been told I need to keep trying to go to the toilet. Scared that if I sleep this UTI will get worse. I just don’t feel safe. :( I’m going to try listening to some guided meditation.

It might just be the painkillers making it difficult to go, are you on anything strong? If you're worried your bladder is full and you can't go get them to scan you (bedside ultrasound) and they can always put a catheter in. It might not even be from the uti
