So basically I have TMJ and bruxism. I am terrible for grinding my teeth at night, I have a mouth guard but I never put it in because it makes me gag (yes my my own fault) but I’ve had sensitivity loads lately and where it is you you can see my roots 😩😩 it’s my two molars and one of my incisors very slightly. Does this mean I will lose my teeth? I take oral hygiene very seriously, I brush after every meal and I have a water flosser etc. my gums look a bit inflamed too but I think that’s cos I’ve just started my period after having my baby 6 weeks ago. My mum has lost all of her teeth due to gum disease and I’m terrified of ending up the same. I can’t explain it feels so odd when I bite down. im going to try and book an emergency appointment tomorrow but please help me calm down before then! I’m only 30 I can’t lose any teeth 😭😭

Is there any chance that your excessive brushing may be causing the recession in your gums? Are you gentle when brushing or does the anxiety cause you to perhaps be a little too forceful at times?

I’m not a dentist, but I asked my dentist about this last week on behalf of my son who also grinds his teeth. He said providing some of the affected teeth remain there are techniques to build them back up. He said making an appointment and a referral to a dental hospital sooner rather than later helps, so definitely make sure you get that appointment. Good luck OP.

Yes it could be caused by that too, however they’re all the teeth I use when I grind them. I’m terrified 😩😩 I know one has always been there cos she has mentioned it before just don’t think it’s ever been this bad, and now of course I’m worrying I have gum disease 😩😩

Until you get an appointment I would brush with a baby tooth brush, a super soft one .

Yes, our dentist has said to brush no more than twice a day.

This is a mental health issue rather than a dental one. Can you have a chat with your doctor about it?

justasking111 · 10/08/2023 08:08

My friend was like you, overbrushing etc. Her gums receded dentist advice was invaluable. So listen to them

I have receding gums and was advised to brush gently, twice a day, using a soft brush. Previous to that, I used to scrub away with a hard brush after every meal. After following the dentist's advice, my gum recession has halted and I'm now very much aware of following the dentist's advice to the letter if I don't want to make them worse.
