Low in Vit D and B12

Tulipvase · 09/08/2023 21:52

Hi

Apparently I’m low in Vit B12 and Vit D. I’m not sure of the measurement as I wasn’t given that by the figures were 118 for B12 and 30 for Vit D.

I have a repeat blood test next week and a telephone appointment so can obviously ask questions then but I’m impatient.

Any idea what they might do?

I started taking supplements immediately. I'm sure they will have helped with my levels as it's been over a year of taking them x

@Neonyellowfish I had some similar symptoms to you, shortness of breath (couldnt catch a full breath), finding it hard to get my words out like mixing the first letters up in a word or not able to find what word I'm looking for. The twitching eye is neurological. Do you have fatigue or pins and needles..? Post what they come back with and hope you get an answer from these bloods.

@Tulipvase ahh ok so it is abit of a waiting game then. I can totally understand your frustration and when they didn't explain what the wait was it seemed silly to make you wait. Hang in there and I hope you have some sort of results to talk through.

Thanks. I asked what my B12 number was today and it was 72.

iv tried requesting at the GP and via their online portal thing to see my test results online but they seem unable to do it for some reason. Wet annoying!

Rainbowgirrl · 16/08/2023 21:10

@Neonyellowfish you said earlier your doctor said you had anemia, was that from having an Intrinsic Factor test..? Was your vitamin D also tested..? I can't recall seeing it. As vit D can be linked to b12 deficiency. And did you get results back from the blood inflammation tests you mentioned..?

You can ask for your results to be printed if you just request them from whoever is on the reception of your doctors surgery. Also ask them for an email address for the admin team so you can email them to ask for access to your medical records. You are entitled to have access to them so definitely don't feel like you are bothering anyone asking for them.

Not sure if I had IFT or if they did Vit D, they did loads including celiac which came back as a no.

However, the inflammation blood tests I just did on Wednesday have come back and the doctor it’s showing raised markers. She wants me to do another stool sample but this time take it back to the doctors before 1pm so they can test it there.

Any idea what this could mean? Slightly worried. My follow up with her isn’t til the 8th sept either as she’s going on holiday for a week.

Rainbowgirrl · 17/08/2023 11:26

@Neonyellowfish do you have a copy of your bloods..? Would be good if you could request them to see what was tested.

The stool may be just as a precaution so they can say they have checked the other possibilities.

By the doctors saying you have anemia would just be good to know what bloods you had and what levels they were to see where they have got that information from.

This is what was tested for when inflammunation markers were tested.

I actually don’t feel that bad.

Iv gained a fair amount of weight over the last 18 months (3 stone) so I put it down to being over weight!!

ScoobyBooby · 20/08/2023 00:27

Rainbowgirrl · 15/08/2023 12:39

@ScoobyBooby interesting to hear that, so do you have daily b12 tablets or injections..?

Sorry missed your post!
I just have daily tablets now . Not needed the injections for a while .

Bimblesalong · 21/08/2023 19:57

I’ve had my loading dose now and am a few more days in. It’s made me realise how grotty I was. Hope all are on the up soon.

Rainbowgirrl · 21/08/2023 22:18

@Neonyellowfish you really was pretty low. And you have no fatigue or any symptoms at all..? When are your loading doses..?

Really hope that you have an action plan from your doctor.

Sux2buthen · 21/08/2023 22:45

Sorry, can I ask?
If you have b12 injections for life is that pernicious anaemia?

Not necessarily. If you do have Pernicious Anemia then it's likely you'll be on B12 injections for life. PA is a lifetime autoimmune condition.

Not all B12 deficiencies are due to PA. Sometimes people just don't absorb B12 well for a variety of reasons even though they don't have PA. In those cases sometimes oral supplements or B12 patches might be enough to get levels up.

Pernicious Anemia and B12 deficiency sometimes are used interchangeably, but PA is actually a specific autoimmune condition.

Sux2buthen · 22/08/2023 06:34

Thankyou, that's what I thought. I'm on the injections for life but haven't been told I have PA or anything, I'm assuming it isn't that or I'd know.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 22/08/2023 06:45

Definitely ask to be checked for coeliac disease, you can be a silent coeliac with no symptoms other than malabsorption.

Sux2buthen · 22/08/2023 07:28

Was that for me?
Im learning a lot from this thread, I've been told nothing in real life and it's been a few years. I do bloat terribly and look about 8 months gone permanently

Thank you 😀 i didn’t go to the doctors for any of these bloods, I only went as one of my eyes keeps twitching since Xmas and I was finding it annoying so she decided to do bloods to rule all that stuff out.

Well to be honest Iv put on a good chunk of weight over the last 18m-2 years (4 and a half stone, I was slimish before at a size 10, now a 16/18) so I put everything down to being fat.
Tired ? Because I’m now fat
Out of breath? Because I’m now fat

Im the heaviest Iv ever been so I just thought this is what it was like being bigger. Iv been saying to people for months that everything feels harder.

I wouldn’t of said I felt terrible though, just more tired then I used too but I also have a child with severe autism that doesn’t sleep properly so a combination of now being fat 😂 sleep interrupted constantly 😂 was my thinking.

My blood tests have also thrown out borderline low thyroid and she wants to retest in 3 months so I’m now blaming all my weight gain on that 👀😅😂
TSH 5.69 [normal range 0.3-5.33]

My loading doses started yesterday and I also started taking my iron & folate at the same time, she gave me those for 4 months.

I have my next app on the 8th Sept to discuss the results of my abnormal inflammation results.

Rainbowgirrl · 22/08/2023 11:16

@Neonyellowfish You certainly need your Vit D and intrinsic factor looking at. They should have tested IF before you had any B12 injections or it can skew the result. Please try query these with your doctor.

The low thyroid is highly likely for the weight gain but the low hemoglobin, b12, ferretin, folate could also be linked. The fact that oxygen isn't getting transported around your body at the rate it should be is making your body work harder than is should. So weight gain, tiredness, brittle hair/nails, twitchy muscles could all be symptoms.

I have told a few people to join but if you are on Facebook join the - Pernecious Anemia/ B12 Deficiency - Support Group. I would not be as well as I am now if it wasn't for the amazing knowledge and support of the people in this group.
