What is this on DD's leg and how urgently does it need looked at?

DD (14 and yes, my PFB) currently on holiday with her dad. She's noticed this itchy mole on her leg which she doesn't remember being there before (but also can't say it definitely wasn't there before).

She has v sensitive skin and has been in chlorinated pools all week.

She says it's not sore, just itchy. Ex says it looks like a mole. DD has been googling and is now freaking out. I've told him to get her off Google and try and reassure her.

I'm going to book next available GP appt for when they get back on Monday but does it need any more urgent assessment than that?

Thanks 💐

There’s redness around it so maybe it’s a bite, maybe take her to a pharmacist tomorrow, they could advise.

That is a mole..in any case they'd have to remove it and biopse it. I have moles that sometimes get itchy, but they're all benign

CuntRYMusicStar · 09/08/2023 18:40

It looks like a mole but if she doesn't remember it being raised and itchy then she should get it checked by the GP when she gets home.

It may just be itchy dry skin from the sun and chlorine but worth getting it checked out. Tell her to make sure she covers it in sunscreen in the day and evening and uses a moisturiser after she showers and before bed and before sunscreen in the morning - the higher the factor the better as always.

And yes, no more googling! Hope she has a nice rest of holiday

Any chance it could be a tick?

AreolaGrande · 09/08/2023 18:43

Pharmacy is a good shout @LizzieSiddal - thank you.

Not a tick @TeaKitten we have experience of those buggers from Ddog and its def not one.

Will pass on your advice re: sunscreen @CuntRYMusicStar

Thanks all

I suspect its been there for awhile but its become irritated and she's now itching it making it red. I've "discovered" moles before now and until I consciously forget them I don't stop rubbing them

whatausername · 09/08/2023 18:55

Itching will just be because she's very aware of it atm and has been rubbing it. See GP when she gets home. Btw, itching isn't a sign of malignancy if that's what you are/she is thinking. However, still worth getting a GP to have a look at it.

Check old digital pictures to see you have any of good quality which allows you to check if you can see anything in her leg.

Hellsbellsandspidersankles · 09/08/2023 19:03

Any changes to a mole should definitely be investigated.

I'm not a medical expert but I'd definitely get her that appointment for next Monday and push for an urgent dermatology referral while you're there. Hopefully it's nothing but they will want to check that it's not a melanoma as some of the classic signs of those are uneven colour and 'petal' shape (I have had one and mine looked quite similar to tour DD's although mine was bigger, and it was itchy. Don't mention that to your daughter though as it will only worry her more and the time between now and then won't make a difference to getting it sorted. They are easily removed once found so try not to panic x
