Double lumpectomy and recon - what to expect?

Hello,

Just wondering how quickly I'll be up and moving about? Not going crazy obviously!

C sections warp your idea of how to get over an operation!

It's also a recon and lift to help make them look reasonable. So both sides

Whennihad a double mastectomy, no reconstruction, I was up and walking (gingerly) the next day. You're likely to have drains in which are a bit unwealdy and awkward.

I'd had 2 x sections and this was much better cos they're not cutting stomach muscles so you can get up and down and there's no problem with bending.

Just thought, this might be different if they're taking from your back for the reconstruction (can't remember what that's called).

Hope it all goes well and happy to answer any questions. (Feel free to DM if you'd prefer)

2 C sections, not sure what an X section is!

Had a lumpectory but not reconstruction and went for a (short) walk first day - you will have fair amount of pain - I felt OK ish after about a week - was back at work after just over 2 weeks

I had a lumpectomy no recon. I was in hospital overnight and tired and fragile for a few days. After about a week I was ok. The worst part for me was cording which is not serious but incredibly painful.
Be aware that they cut through some nerves and you will lose some sensation at the back of your arm, some of it permanently. It's not a problem but I know a lot of local former breast cancer women and none of them were expecting that.
Do the exercises as soon as you can.

Thank you for your replies.

I say recon - it's basically lumpectomies on both sides and then a boob lift (moving nipples upwards) which is essentially a small reduction. I may not be using the right terminology.

🤷🏻‍♀️

I have since spoken to tbe breast nurse who also said it's not the same as C-section which is reassuring.

At least I won't be interrupted by a small child feeding all night, eh?!

@Parsleymint I don't have any numbness in my arm but I very much agree with do the exercises

@Ikeamearballlunch because I assume you are having sential node biopsy on both sides which is in general the most painful bit it may be more tricky and more painful but I hope not

Also the supportive non wired bra is important! You wear all times and I think made a big difference to my pain and recovery

Selfesteem22 · 08/08/2023 09:35

Although bra thing might be different with the plastic surgery as well m&s one come highly recommended if needed

Parsleymint · 08/08/2023 13:58

@Selfesteem22 Good that you escaped the numbness. It's just loss of sensation to the touch, nothing more.
It took me ages to get the right bra. I have very small breasts and didn't want wires as they stick in. After a couple of years and many failures I found sloggi zero feel bras are perfect for me.
