How to avoid a chicken pox scar?

My beautiful DS (3yo) has just had chicken pox and was really good at not scratching his spots. But he had a huge spot on his chin and now the scab has been knocked off. You can see the hole/indent it has left behind although it hasn't completely healed. Is there anything I can do to stop it healing that way?

No I don't think so, but they do fade gradually over time. I don't know what others think, but my observation when my three had chickenpox have led me to believe that the marks will happen even if they DON'T scratch, they seem to be related to the actual spot, rather than what you do to it, IYSWIM. So there was probably nothing you could do anyway. My DDs have marks from spots that I KNOW they didn't touch.

Not to be the bearer of bad news, but it will take a very long time to fade. My 3 year old has severe "denting" on his face from chicken pox. I took him to a dermatologist who told me there was nothing to be done and they would fade by the time he was a teenager. I was devastated. She told me the whole reason most americans vaccinate against chicken pcx is to avoid such scarring. My oldest ds has no scarring from a mild case so if I hadn't seen for myself the terrible scarring it can cause from my younger ds, I would not have believed her.

I also took him to a homeopath who said that although they could treat actual scarring, this is not scarring as such and was not treatable.
