Tendonitis in my heel...advice?

So yesterday, I went to put my shoes on to go for a walk. I couldn't. The pain on the back of my heel was awful, like something digging in. Tried every shoe and trainer I had.
Kept it elevated and put some ice on it and tried again later. No luck.
Went to walk in centre and was told it was tendonitis it my heel.
I can walk on it, put weight on it, it's just incredibly sensitive to touch. Was advised to ice every 4 to 7 hours and take ibuprofen, ease up on exercise and go for occasional walks but rest where I can and it should be better in 2 weeks.
Went to the pharmacy today to get a support and was told if it doesn't hurt when walking, I probably don't need one and I really should have a podiatry referral. She also said it will likely take months to heal.
So....does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice?

I have chronic achilles tendonitis, and the only thing that eases it is using bespoke orthotics in my shoes whenever possible, and when it flares I need physio including ultrasound treatment. The orthotics were made by the NHS and have lasted years.

It took 18 months for mine to heal the first time. Then it came back and took another 2 years of being super careful, having physio and acupuncture etc. My physio recommended I always wear supportive soles and add Sorbothane heel pad insoles to give some extra cushioning / protection. If I don't wear the heel pads, I notice the pain starts to come back. So I have multiple sets of the damn heel pads (I buy them from Amazon) and at the hint of pain, I go back to doing my physio exercises and the pain seems to go away. I've also stopped doing anything high impact. High impact days are over it seems.

Good point about avoiding high impact. My physio has warned me to never run for a bus!
