Breast clinic - what to expect

OhDoh · 03/08/2023 16:46

Firstly i am absolutely terrified of doctors/hospitals/GPs. Found a lump after I started having pain in my breast. Managed to convince myself to go to the GP. Gp was lovely tbh and said she said she wasn't too concerned but they can't see inside. Have a breast clinic appointment this weekend and I am bricking it! I have been doing so well to box it up in my mind but today I feel like my life is on hold until it is over - I know stupid! logically I know 9/10 lumps are fine but of course my head is going straight to that 10%. I have age on my side as I'm only 34. Anything I need to no for the breast clinic? What should I expect? Do not want to go down the Google trap so thought I would ask on here ☺️ Ty x

I found a lump at around your age, and was given an ultrasound rather than a mammogram due to my age. Turned out to be nothing. This was also in another country, so UK might be different.
Good on you for getting checked, hope it all goes well.

Always good to be checked out. You might have an ultrasound scan, or possibly a mammogram, and you may have a biopsy.
Pain is not a typical symptom of breast cancer lumps.

My dd had a lump aged 26.

At her hospital appointment she saw a doctor who had a look. Sent her for an ultrasound and biopsy, then back over to see the doctor again for what they thought it was. Back a week later for results.

Luckily it was benign. It was all very easy and took a couple of hours.

Okay thank you all! Least I know roughly what to expect now :) fingers cross all is okay x

Ours was a one stop shop.

I spoke to the consultant first. Then they sent me for mammograms and ultrasounds. There was a nurse in the appointment at all times. Then we got the results with same consultant.

They will be a lot of stripping off, and the consultant will feel you boobs. You’ll also have to strip (behind a curtain) for the mammogram etc. therefore, wear easy tops. I had tests in winter, so I went bra-less, and wore baggy T-shirts and jumpers.

There can be a lot of hanging around between the different stages, so take a kindle, book, bottle of water, oat bar etc.

You’re allowed to take family or friends with you as a chaperone.

Most of the consultants I saw were male. If you prefer to see a female, may be worth ringing them beforehand.

Hope everything is okay.

Thank you @Riverlee that was really helpful - - baggy top etc is a good idea!

Hi @OhDoh how did you get on?

I've just got back from the GP who will refer me to the breast clinic.

It's a bit terrifying, isn't it?

OhDoh · 09/08/2023 18:55

Definitely terrifying but it was a very quick appointment and saw a nurse/consultant then had a scan and then discharged. Mine was all okay thankfully. @SpiderVsBee you will be fine. Wear a baggy top and remember 9/10 lumps are nothing to worry about. Good luck xx
