So sorry to hear this, no advice or experience but I'm sure someone will have xx

Flllightattendant · 27/02/2008 11:44

This doesn't sound too scary.

MrsCarrot · 27/02/2008 11:51

I had this last week, justwater, and also four years ago.

If you need treatment there and then they give you a local and remove the affected area, it's not pleasant obviously but fairly straighforward and over quickly. Make sure you ask any questions you want to, some of the doctors can rush you through but you are entitled to have explanations.

Sometimes it needs repeating again (like me) but it isn't cancer, it's an abnormality with potential and you will have it removed if necessary. Try not to worry.

MrsCarrot · 27/02/2008 11:53

Oh, and I have had another baby since the last treatment. As far as I know it doesn't affect fertility. One of the old treatments sometimes affected the cervix but the newer ones don't.

kim27 · 27/02/2008 11:57

Hi, I know exactly how you are feeling.

When I was 19 I had an abnormal smear test come back which showed I had abnormal cells which had to be removed. I had to the coloscopy treatment which although uncomfortable it wasn't painful.

Instead of the usual smear test pattern I have to have one every year but other than that I have had no problems since then (8 years on)

At the time the doctors told me it wouldn't cause any problems having kids and I have just started try for my first one so fingers crossed

justwaterformethanks · 27/02/2008 11:57

i rang the dr straight away and said i need referring , i said i didnt need to see my gp first i just want the referral asap ,but i think i might ring back and speak to a nurse if possible . The worst part is i know the women who soes the coloscopies ( ok thats not the worst part obviousley!!) ,mind you she is lovely and very good at her job too ,so perhaps thats a bonus knowing that i will see someone experienced .How long do you think i will have to wait ?

mrs carrot i read your thread about your treatment ,made my eyes water a bit ,perhaps i shouldnt have read it !!

MrsCarrot · 27/02/2008 12:03

Oh dear, was hoping you hadn't read that! I got a difficult doctor rather than the treatment itself being horrific iyswim. Lots of people said on that thread that theirs was ok, not nice obviously but quick and they felt supported. Take someone in with you as well. DH was outside with ds2 but I wish he had come in now.

kim27 · 27/02/2008 12:06

I think I waited about three weeks but I had bleeding which they wanted to stop first so hopefully your appointment will come through sooner.

One of the worst parts for me was when they asked if a med student could watch the procedure, he was about the same age as me so I after I turned bright red I politely refused

MrsCarrot · 27/02/2008 12:09

My appointment was for five days after I got my letter.

PurplePillow · 27/02/2008 12:11

I had this before i conceived dd infact my check up was due while i was pregnant but was put back til dd was about 6weeks

It not that bad a bit uncomfortable but quite interesting as you can watch parts of the procedure if you want to

Don't panic too much, better to get it dealt with now, don't think you#ll have too long to wait

Good luck

Hello -- I had similar result when I was 29.
My colposcopy wasn't that bad, like a slightly longer-than-usual smear I suppose.
Then I had a cone biopsy to take away the affected area. Bad cells were in a hard-to-reach spot so I had a general anaesthetic, and I commend this route to you if it's an option. (But then I do love generals.)
I was only 'out' for a few mins, though, so it's clearly a fairly routine procedure!
Since then, I've had two babies and touch wood, no unusual smears.

bettybeetroot · 27/02/2008 12:17

I had a coloscopy at 27 and treatment for abnormal cells. I had a local anesthetic and had the cells lazered. I didn't feel a thing, went home and thought that wasn't bad but when the anesthetic wore off I was in a lot of pain so take lots of pain killers before you need them iykwim (the pain only lasted a day or 2 though). i have had two dc's since then btw with no problems - concieving very quickly.

MrsCarrot · 27/02/2008 12:19

yes, agree with that, first time I waited and then when it was painful nothing much helped. This time I took paracetomol and ibuprofen before the local wore off and it was much better, just like period pains.

justwaterformethanks · 27/02/2008 14:11

thanks everyone for your input ,my friend turned up just after i posted so i had a good chat with her ,im waiting for the duty dr to ring back as i have a couple of questions i wanted to check with them ,rather than having a full appointment . Just want to get it over with tbh.

Hi Justwater. I have a colposcopy, biospy and repeat smears every 3 to 6 months. There cant be much left of me down there! I am also at the same level but dyskariosis (sp?) is PRE cancerous cells and they are being watched, it would be caught before anything else happened. I have had this for 6 years now and have two children aged 4 and 3. They thought maybe I would need a stitch in cervix at 5 months to hold baby in but they hung in there and were big uns too. Dont panic too much - it is mightily unpleasant but very necessary. Good luck, pray the rooms is warm and dont clench xx

VictorianSqualor · 27/02/2008 16:38

Onlyt read the first few posts so sorry if I repeat anything but I had an abnormal smear about a year ago. Went to the hospital had a colposcopy and a LEEP which is where they take a part of your cervix off to try and fix it and see if it is cancer.

My results showed it wasn't cancer, the next period I realised I had concieved(am now 34 wks) and I had a smear two months ago whilst pregnant to check if the cells had come back, they hadn't.

Good Luck.

justwaterformethanks · 27/02/2008 17:53

thanks for your posts ,had a bit of a up and down day , the drs receptionists have reallly worked their socks off on on my behalf . My biggest concern was whether i would need my coil removing before the colcoscopy ,as i wondered if it would interfere with any treatment , i even rung the womens unit at our local hospital and they seemed to think i should ,so then i tried to get an answer from my gp but to no avail , the long and short of it is that i now have an appointment with a great dr on monday morning (she is THE coil dr ) and they are sending a referral in the meantime ,so now i feel a bit better about the situation . Keep your fingers crossed for me
