Mouth ulcer won’t heal

6 replies

Rainallnight · 01/08/2023 22:44

I’ve had a mouth ulcer for over a week. Very painful, difficult to eat. I’ve tried two over the counter remedies and they’re not working.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

If this is unusual for you, then you should ask your dentist to take a look. They take ulcers that aren’t healing very seriously.

I gargle with salt water if I have a nasty ulcer. I gargle with mouth wash before meals so I can eat (that is painful though but it numbs my mouth for about half an hour so I can eat).

I get these a lot, sometimes they take three weeks to heal.
What usually works for me in the end: take lots of vitamin B complex, ideally chew it. Drink way more water. Sleep more. Reduce stress. Boil drinking water until ulcer heals (but not if this means drinking less water).

Put salt on it, stings like hell at first but works.

Mine take three weeks from beginning to end. Salt water gargle is helpful with pain. Sugary things will sting more than any other food. Eat soft things like soup, eggs and porridge. They are a misery though.

@WildFeathers As luck would have it, I have an appointment on Monday about something else so I’ll ask them to take a look. It’s unusual these days - I used to get them when I was on a different asthma inhaler and lazy about rinsing. At the time, cortisone lozenges and oral pastes were available but don’t seem to be any more.

@Violetparis Actual neat salt?!

@Mummy08m One of the over the counters remedies I’ve got has Vit B in it. Interesting about the boiled water. I could definitely do with more sleep and less stress!

Thanks for the replies, really appreciate it.

I’m on holidays at the moment with lots of amazing food and this is really getting in the way. It may be the first time in my life I’ll have lost weight on holiday!

I’ve not noticed it about sugary food. It’s right down below my very bottom gum, behind my lip, so food isn’t touching it but the motion of chewing is so painful.
