Sorry to hear about your impending stay in hospital.

What is their policy on bringing in food? Some hospitals don't allow it.

cremolafoam · 27/02/2008 11:06

ooh don't know about policy. was thinking of covert food supply really.i expect they will have some rules especially as some people may be in with allergies. have already got some innocent smoothies and those individual cup size coffee filters.i can't go 2 weeks without decent coffee.LOL
have pile of books
laptop (no wifi in hospital)

brain a bit mashed as they only phoned this morning to say come in tomorrow.will have to organise food for dh and dd today too.
and the house is a tip

have you a laptop (or can any friends lend you one?) our local hospital has internet (you do have to pay)

don't worry about house.

dh is grown up - he can sort his food out. Its time to look after yourself.

See if can take in own pillow if poss - makes a massive difference to comfort.

Good luck - I hope the treatment works.

Tortington · 27/02/2008 12:28

id defo gadget miself up

mobile phone - withsome decent games - is a falacy that mobile phones intrfere with equipmen

can you tll them you are an important business type and you must take in own laptop?

you could then watch DVDs

you could take in a PSP and get someone to buy you the psp dvd's like mini dvd's - like films for the psp

or a ds lite

it almost makes it appealing

I find the worst thing in hospital is not being able to sleep because of the light and noise - so, if you've got time, quick dash to chemist for eye shield and ear plugs.

Food: small cartons of fruit juice, packets of oat cakes, packets of muesli bars, perhaps dried fruit and or nuts - all easy to transport and store.

Things to do: find a series of books that you've not read for a bit and work your way through them; Crosswords/Sudoku/Kakuro/other puzzles. Do something creative like write/draw book for dd (will you be able to do this?)

Good luck, hope its not too bad

I have to stay in occasionaly for COPD/asthma/infection flare ups and am vegan, so although the menu is awful and most of the staff don't even really know what a vegan is, I am allowed to eat my own stuff that either DH brings in or I buy from the canteen when well enough. The canteen downstairs might be good and have loads of salads and things that if you were able you could pick up, or get your hubby to. You could take in loads of dried fruit and also things like carrots which keep well and can be eaten with no prep.
Box of crackers and jar of olives, nuts if allowed, cereal and long life soymilk that doesn't need refrigeration, new york bagels keep ages, fresh fruit, hummus and crackers ect.

Shmoke an a pancake? Crepe an a cuban?

shrooms · 27/02/2008 12:44

Do you have an ipod? A cross word book, some form of work, a sketchbook?

Hope it goes well!

LiegeAndLief · 27/02/2008 12:49

Poor you, I was in for 4 weeks when pregnant (and not feeling ill) and it was very dull. I had a laptop with dvds and a psp like custardo suggested. Will you have patientline (the tv and phone by the bed)? You can access the internet from there but it is very slow. It is also worth ringing them up and trying to haggle a discount as you will be in for a while, worked for me! You could look at it as an opportunity to get some reading done...

Few home comforts, eg pillow/blanket/soft towel makes it more bearable.

Good luck, hope it flies by...

LiegeAndLief · 27/02/2008 12:51

Re food - everyone so far has been very healthy, I had large packets of biscuits and chocolate milk! Also my own breakfast cereal, just got bowl and milk from the hopsital breakfast.

ChorusLine · 27/02/2008 12:53

Oh no poor you - I have done a fair few times in my life as I had severe psoriasis.

Maybe i am strange but never seemed to mind hospital food - always came out a few pounds lighter though!

Wish I had a DS Lite in those days

Good Luck x

cremolafoam · 27/02/2008 13:27

oh thanks everyone. lots of good ideas. sister has offered me her portable dvd just now.so good stuff. the patient line thing is really expensive if i remember correctly.will try and do a deal
have just been to the library and got a pile of paperbacks.have got knitting too.
dried fruit and bars excellent idea
wonder if i can get a bag of mini croissants past the monitor!
maybe a few bottles of merlot( no i doubt it)to go with the jar of olives. tee hee.
i am stressed about leaving dh and dd tbh.i know they will be fine, but i have nagging doubts.
hope there are a few people to talk to .
see you all in a fortnight.

How about choosing one book that you've always thought you should read, but never got around to it (maybe War and Peace, or something more exciting!)? Or maybe you've always thought you'd like to understand more about European history to help the children out - you could get a book on that.
Imagine, being able to start AND finish a book........
Write your Easter cards (or Christmas cards!!!!)
Do youi need to put phots into albums? Bring them with you.

I am just thinking about things I always put off........

BettySpaghetti · 27/02/2008 13:39

I found it really difficult to concentrate enough to read a "proper" book when I was in hospital after a knee op (probably as I was too busy people watching and off my face on painkillers ).

Trashy magazines or a book of short stories might be better for dipping into.

Also Suduko or crossword books?

KathG · 27/02/2008 14:11

definitely ipod - put audio books on it, plus every podcast you can think of! Blocks out the background noise as well.
