Partner found out he has IBS - any tips/remedies?

My partner has just found out he has IBS after really struggling with abdominal pain for months on end. He hasn’t done any food intolerance tests or anything like that, he has been prescribed Mebeverine for flare ups but hasn’t been given any other advice.

Does anyone with IBS have any recommendations for things that help during a flare up? If dairy is a trigger, what’s a good alternative to have in cups of tea, cereal etc? (My partner has tried oat milk and it makes him really bloated so that’s not an option).

He is feeling a bit down and daunted at the prospect of having to cut lots of food and drink out of his diet, so if anyone has any tips or recommendations I’d really appreciate it. Thank you in advance 😊

Have a look at the fodmap diet. It is restrictive at 1st but removes lots from diet with idea to slowly introduce 1 by 1 and see what can be tolerated. It might be worth asking for a coeliac panel blood test running. I only say this as I had horrific 'IBS' before I was eventually diagnosed.

Nightshades can commonly upset IBS along with lots of processed foods. I can't help with the milk substitute as im allegic to dairy and soya so just drink black tea. There are some nice fruit/herbal ones but i get not everyones taste. Hopefully someone else will be more useful with this! Once he identifies foods that trigger him things should get better.

I too suggest fodmap.

The good news is that, strangely, things I’ve cut out for years eventually end up ok to eat again.
no idea why. But if the ibs is stress related then like mine perhaps there is hope for the future.
