Rose thorn injury - so painful!

I was gardening today and got the usual thorn scratches on my arms, but then felt something sore on my inner wrist. Thought it was a tick but then realised it was a rose thorn stuck in my skin. Pulled it out, it bled a tiny bit, then forgot about it.

This evening it’s hurting SO MUCH.

Compared to the scratches it is miniscule, literally tiny, you can barely see it, but it aches and when I touch it lightly it’s very sore. It also hurts when I move my hand / wrist. It’s very slightly raised and pink.

Starting to worry it’s put some kind of fungus or infection in!? Will go to GP if it’s worse tomorrow, but wondered if anyone has had similar and any tips or what to look out for?

Thank you

They are so bloody painful! I put some tea tree oil or similar on a plaster and slap it on for a couple of days to ward off infections.

Are you up to date with your tetanus jabs?

whatisheupto · 28/07/2023 21:59

Agree I had one not long ago and it was really surprisingly painful!

Wash properly and put some TCP on it. They're painful!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/07/2023 22:11

**thoroughly not properly 😂

Are you sure you got it all out. I did this a couple of weeks ago, two of rhe buggers, I pulled them out but they splintered and some was still in. So so sore to touch,

I used olive oil. It draws it out, you keep it soaked on the sore bit for 30 mins and you can then get it out with a needle.

GiraffeDoor · 28/07/2023 22:23

I'd guess it's split as you've pulled it out, and there's still a tiny sliver of it in there- it doesn't matter how tiny it is, it's unbearable while it's in there. I'd try a soak in some hot water (and I would give it a bit of a squeeze, and/or dig around and make a big old mess with a pair of tweezers, but that's probably not responsible advice)

JobChangeSoonPlease · 28/07/2023 22:40

If it's impossible to get out (or see the left over splinter) then you can go to the Gp/AE. They can do an X-ray and find the missing piece.

Check out your tetanus status asap. Yr GP should have it on record.
Gardening and rose thorns can be a precursor for tetanus or a bacterial infection.

It’s probably nothing to worry about & all will be ok but best to check.

I feel for you. A couple of years ago I knelt on a pyracantha needle and couldn't walk properly for weeks! I think these thorns go deeper than we realise

Firstworldprobs · 28/07/2023 22:52

It’s so so tiny but I took a zoom photo on my phone and I think there is something left… I’ve taken a PP’s advice and it’s currently got olive oil on under a plaster…

Its my DS’s birthday tomorrow so i hope I don’t have to get it looked at!

Can tetanus kill me before Monday?? 🫢

You could soak it in salt water too before applying antiseptic and a plaster, that will keep it soft and anything left in it will work its way out.

Keep an eye on it as you can get sporotrichosis from rose thorns, if it starts getting inflamed and purple go and see your doctor, it is rare though.
