What are these patches on his hands?

15 year old son suddenly developed these patches on his knuckles. One on the left is on the knuckle at the base of his thumb. The one on the right is on his index finger knuckles. He has exactly the same two patches on his other hand. They weren't there a few days ago but now are, and are quite large.

Have wracked brains for something repetitive he may have been doing to cause them, eg using his Xbox with his hands on the carpet but that's not what he does and can't think of any other causes so I don't think it's friction- caused.

Dr Google suggested "knuckle pads" but my sons are much bigger than those on internet and have developed much faster.

Son has an underlying genetic condition that causes multiple weird conditions.

Will contact GP of course but their e-consult is shut and I don't want to waste on of their 1-1 appts if my son has just got dry skin patches !

Wonder if anyone recognises these sort of lumps / patches and can point me in the right direction?

What is his underlying genetic condition? That might help us know if its related to that or not.

Is is itchy, painful?

Tilllly · 26/07/2023 23:24

Does he have an autoimmune condition?

bipsandbops · 26/07/2023 23:28

Underlying condition is DiGeorge syndrome / also called 22q11 deletion.

They are not sore or itchy. They don't feel like they have fluid in them.

DiGeorge does cause immunity issues but his blood tests including recent ones have always shown his immunity to be good.

Cannot contract his specialist team as it's at Great Ormond St and they only see them every five years! And he's just had his review there but these patches weren't there then.

He does have a paediatrician locally but I don't want to ask for an appt for something that could just be dry skin.

But these patches are very large and visible and have literally appeared in the last 24 hours or so.
They're about the size of a 20p piece and they're on the same two exact places on each hand - but nowhere else.

Dermatomyostis?

And no, dunno how to spell it

Looks v similar to something a neighbour had
But that was because of his autoimmune disease

Autoimmune conditions can throw up some random things. From eczema upwards... I had a blotchy skin thing that was benign but autoimmune related. Defo get it checked but hopefully it's not uncomfortable x

Thank you. I've looked it up, but can't see any other symptoms that my son has of this. But I appreciate the suggestion.

This is interesting, thank you. I would usually have done an econsult with images to the GP but for some reason they have stopped taking any econsults.

Can you email a photo to GP?

Might be something innocuous such as a allergic reaction? It looks very dry, maybe try moisturising it and just seeing if it goes on its own ?
