Homeopathic remedy for leg cramp

Ihaveausername · 26/07/2023 21:09

I occasionally get cramp in my thigh or my calf, sometimes in bed and sometimes when watching TV. It can be incredibly painful but I try to live with it. I was chatting to a friend from US who has similar but she takes some homeopathic remedy and it works for her. She gets it from Amazon US. It doesn't appear to be available to UK.
Does anyone in UK take anything for these symptoms that actually helps, easily available either on high street or Internet shop. Thanks

Eat a banana.

Ohmylovejune · 26/07/2023 21:11

I thought it was something to do with not drinking enough water or salt, or something. Have you researched what causes it?

I suffered a lot as a teen but rarely now..flipping painful!

My friend swears by tonic water I've no idea why it can't be slimline though.

I’d guess it’s because of the quinine.

Meant to be very good for cramps.

AnxiousShep · 26/07/2023 21:55

Magnesium.

Cookerhood · 26/07/2023 21:56

Homeopathy doesn't work, so any effect is placebo. Try some of the other suggestions.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 26/07/2023 21:59

Could be dehydration, in which case a homeopathic tincture can only help.

fartfacenotfatface · 26/07/2023 23:02

Traditional tonic water containing quinine is your friend here.

Ihaveausername · 26/07/2023 23:03

I don't think it is related to dehydration potassium / sodium levels as I have suffered with this for many years and already eliminated them as possible causes.

Have you seen a Dr ?

Roystonv · 27/07/2023 07:36

Yep to tonic water, my DH swears by it and says it works very quickly. Cheap, easy to obtain so give it a try.

TheLongpigs · 27/07/2023 07:39

Definitely tonic water with quinine. My dad drank a small glass every evening as medicine when he had regular cramps.

endofthelinefinally · 27/07/2023 07:41

Tonic water works because it contains quinine. It doesn't matter if it is ordinary or sugar free. (Also works if you put gin in it).
Homeopathy is purely placebo, so don't waste your money.
I used to get awful cramps in my feet and calves. Now I am on a medication containing quinine for another condition I never get cramps.

rileynexttime · 27/07/2023 07:47

Tonic water contains no more than 83 mg of quinine per liter—a much lower concentration than the 500 to 1,000 mg in the therapeutic dose of quinine tablets. Drinking a few ounces of tonic water shouldn't be harmful, but it isn't likely to prevent your leg cramps.

And yet it seems to work for many people. Definitely worth a try.

It does seem too, well worth a trySmile

CMOTDibbler · 28/07/2023 08:53

I have always suffered with cramp, but taking a magnesium supplement completely stops them (until I get lazy and complacent and stop taking them, then a few weeks later the cramps will be back). Worked for my dad and a colleague too

donquixotedelamancha · 28/07/2023 09:16

Ironically this is just about the only condition where homeopathy will help, because drinking lots of water does reduce the risk of cramp.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 28/07/2023 09:58

Also tonic water - recommended by dSis's dance teacher decades ago. Got my through pregnancies and lots of sports recovery.

Yeah, it is, but you need a LOT more than you get in tonic water these days.

im getting a lot of cramp at night. I drink a LOT of water & have sufficient salts in my diet. I can't eat bananas 🍌

I'm at a loss...what to do, the only good thing is I've become very accomplished at getting rid of it once it starts.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/07/2023 11:30

You need magnesium glycinate, op. Get an oral supplement and an oil spray.

Use the spray on your legs, it may tingle/itch the first few times you use it, this is normal. Take the oral supplement, as well.

You won't have to use the spray forever. You should see improvement the first day, and after a week or so, once your magnesium levels are up, you can just take the oral supplement and use the spray when needed.
