Probiotic whilst taking doxycycline

My DS aged 14 has been prescribed doxycycline for tick bite and start of possible lymes disease. Have had the information about staying out the sun (tricky as we go abroad in 5 days)! I have read that it can cause tummy upset too. Can anyone recommend a probiotic for a teenage boy? We haven't used any before

I don’t know about probiotics but be really careful in the sun. I’m on long term doxycycline and burn and get rashes very quickly if I’m in the sun too long, even with factor 50 on.

Make sure your son eats before he takes doxicyclene.

most embarrassing thing I've ever done (and I don't embarrass easily) was to throw up in a Greek taverna while rushing to the loos.

me and give or six Greek workmen. I felt unable to explain (language difficulty) that it was nothing at all to do with the food at the taverna, I'd it eaten at that point.

the sun thing I found relatively easy to manage. I say in the shade and wore a good sunscreen.

The key thing for me on doxy was to not take on an empty stomach. The one time I did I was sick a few hours later (and I’ve got a cast-iron stomach!). But I had no problems with it on a full stomach

We have 5 days before we go so hopefully will suss out if does anything awful. Don't want any Toliet problems on a plane! Just told him to eat first, apparently also no laying down after?!

I'm on it now. So far so good. No problem with my stomach. Cannot comment on the sun as haven't been out much.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 24/07/2023 21:29

Yes definitely take it after food and with a full glass of water and stay upright- sat up is fine for 30 mins after taking it. It makes me sick if I take it on an empty stomach.

Anyone else on this now and know how long it takes to kick in for pneumonia?

Gettingbysomehow · 18/01/2024 12:52

I've just finished a course for pneumonia. It kicked in after 5 days. I ways take it after food and take a probiotic daily anyway. I get good ones from the health food shop and chemist. They will advise on the best ones. Ways ask the pharmacist.
As for sun....what sun. There is none here.

I’m on day 2 of mine, hospital said I have pneumonia I am really floored with it and just want to feel better xx

RosemaryDill · 18/01/2024 13:58

I've had it s few times. I would say that it's probably pointless to take probiotic along with doxy as it will kill all gut bacteria. Start him on it once he finishes.

I use these, they are also suitable for children. Take them for several weeks after the AB has finished too.

Bio-Kult Advanced Multi-Strain Formulation for Digestive System 120 Capsules, 30 g amzn.eu/d/6Jdmi9a

And no lying down after taking the AB, it'll make him feel really nauseous. No idea why but I didn't follow that rule and bloody wish I had!!
