Leg pain

For the past few weeks when getting out of bed and walking about in the morning around the house the whole of my ankles are quite stiff and sore to walk on at first and the past few days I've had aching constant pain (bearable but uncomfortable) at the front of my shins and inner calves , I've not really been worried as it's both legs. I had a search on Google and it came up shin splints but I don't run or exercise , I'm a mum to 3 boys ages 5 and under so I'm constant about the house so maybe came from that.
I'm going to change my doctors today as the one I'm currently at keeps fobbing me off when I phone up as I've just been diagnosed with postnatal depression and anxiety so they keep telling me I'm looking for excuses to why I'm feeling a certain way.
I'm on 10mg of citalopram and have been for the past 2 months now and not even had a single check up or call so I think I'm on my last straw with this practice I'm at.

Anyways thought I'd post here to see if anyone has had a similar situation

(Posted a picture where it's been hurting , it's also the whole front of my shin also)

How long as this been going on for? Is it a one off?

Are you wearing proper shoes (trainers or similar) round the house OP? Even if you aren’t doing formal exercise you might get shin splints if you are running about a bit with the boys.

What are your calf’s like in strength? One of the best exercises to avoid them is doing some calf raises (basically going slowly up on your tip toes and back down). If you can do that 10 times a few times a day it would make a big difference.

Sorry to hear about your post natal depression and doctors experience. I think sometimes you do just have to be super demanding with the doctors. Hopefully the citalopram helps but it’s usually the first AD they try (probably cheapest for the nhs) so if you aren’t getting anywhere definitely try another one.

DustyLee123 · 24/07/2023 07:56

2 months of Citalopram isn’t very long, I wouldn’t expect a check yet.
Id get some slippers, not the slip on type, with a thick sole to support your feet. No high heels, but not flats either, a small heel on a shoe/trainer that is attached to your food. No slip ons. Do not let your feet touch the floor without something in them.
‘Then heel raises on a step. Put the front of your feet, the padded bit, on the edge of the bottom step and go all the way up and down a few times.

@Bonniethewestie
Thankyou for getting back to me , I'm mostly in the house just now so bare feet most of the time unless I need to go out then I wear new balance which is a soft insole but I'm up and down the stairs constantly in the house. It started with around my ankle , then the last few days it's been both front of shin and inner but this morning I've worked up and it's both the back of my calves also. I'm sure I'll be fine it's more just the fact I can't rest with 3 kids that constantly need my attention but Thankyou I'll defo give the calf raises a go 😃

@DustyLee123
Thankyou for getting back to me 😃 that's good to know about doctors , I'm very new to all of this so I wasn't sure if I'd ever get a check up etc as I've still been very emotional and leading towards my period is the worse with intrusive and obsessive thoughts (nothing major but they do get in the way) having the kids really helps when I have a down day with helping me take my mind off things. My youngest is 7 months old and only hit me when he turned 5 months so everything I'm feeling is new but Thankyou for letting me know 🫶🏻

I used to be a gymnast so I'll defo give calf raises a go see if they help 😊

I’d also take vitamin d. I had bone pain when deficient.

worldwidetravel2017 · 24/07/2023 09:56

Get your b12 , vit D and fererin checked is my advice

Cr20 · 24/07/2023 10:07

@worldwidetravel2017 @Haggisfish3

Thankyou for the reply , I got my bloods taken a few weeks ago as I've been really exhausted recently and they came back that 140 haemoglobin and 46 iron stores that's all they had mentioned. I've still got prescribed iron tablets in the cupboard from when I was pregnant so might just take one a day and see if it helps

No worries at all! Do some calf stretches too like the one below (you can get the boys involved 😂). But defo the strengthening will help! And ibrupofen too before it settles for the pain.

Yes I think it’s barefoot in the house! In lockdown I got planti fasciitis a lot and it was basically because I had gone from wearing shoes to the office to just being barefoot all day.

I've been really struggling with hip pain, and read on here about high dose vitamin D. It's now stopped completely now I take one daily.

Cr20 · 24/07/2023 10:10

@Bonniethewestie this is really interesting to know that being barefoot could do such a thing 😂 who knew! Thankyou though , defo invest in a pair of crocs now 🫶🏻

When you say 46 iron scores

Is that feretin ?

Have u specifically asked 4 feretin test ?

Is your body ( / medical history) generally good @ absorbing stuff ?

Basically - if feretin is 46 - you could do with help with it & you could do with keeping an eye on it

After iron iv @ hospital - mine went to 252..

Under 100 isn't ace - even tho NHS have wide normal ranges

Cr20 · 24/07/2023 10:12

@MillWood85 aw really! That's crazy isn't it! Glad you feel better 🫶🏻 I'll definitely give it a go , where did you get your vitamin d from ?
I'm only 25 (next Monday) and feel like I'm falling to pieces but I think the kids literally drained everything from me when pregnant 😂😂

@worldwidetravel2017

Honestly the doctors never told me much , there reply was exactly this and then when I mentioned about sore bones and tiredness they blames the fact I've got kids and then their exact words were "your just looking for an excuse to blame the way your feeling and it's just you anxiety taking over" which I didn't appreciate but maybe I was over thinking things. This is why I'm going to change my doctors today as they don't listen or interested in anything I have to say

Feeling heard as a patient is so important

Dya have/ use NHS app ?

Should give u numbers / blood test results

Ask new drs 4 full blood count

Plus -
Vit D
Feretin
B12

Trust me - i learnt the hard way - my b12 wasnt tested 4 over a year - i asked 4 it to be done - its tound a big deficiency

worldwidetravel2017 · 24/07/2023 10:38

Also - when baring in mind those tests upcoming
& results

How is your body 4 absorbing stuff ?

Mine is useless re absorbing

Hence how i ended up with iron iv

And most likely b12 injections next month

Cr20 · 24/07/2023 10:45

@worldwidetravel2017

I'm honestly not to sure how my body is absorbing , I taken iron tablets all my pregnancy's and they seems to work even though I still felt like crap but they would go back to normal the next time was tested after birth. I'm actually thinking of going private to get my bloods done as I'm not getting anything. I was just told to take multivitamins. Sometimes my arms and all over my body can be achy also but was told that's anxiety and because I'm tense.
