My 18 month old came home from nursery today with a slight rash over her chest and back. It doesn't seem to be sore or itchy and isn't red at the moment, just has a bobbly appearance. Other children at the nursery have had chicken pox recently, so its doing the rounds. She also has symptoms of a cold, constant runny nose etc. Any suggestions??

You will know in the morning. Sounds quite possible though, as the chest and back tend to be where the first spots appear. If so, by morning there should be a few proper chicken-pox spots there.

Something to look forward to then....!!! Sounds like it comes on very quickly, how long to the spots generally last and is there anything i can give her?

My DS2 (6) is going back to school tomorrow after Chicken Pox. He had cold symptoms, tummy ache and was v. tired. Spots appeared over night a few on his face, chest under arms and top of his back.. they then spread down his body over the next day or two.

I gave him piriton syrup and bicarb in the bath eased the itching, does your LO like the bath, could be a good distraction if she gets itchy and upset.

The advice is not to use calam, ine anymore ass it is drying and makes the spots scab and itch more but you can get calamine with glycerine from the chemist which helped with the itching too.

It's a bore but atleast she will have had it and got it out the way. I'm waiting for my other three to get it now, hopefully all together

My pharmasist told us not to give piriton till the last spot has appreared as it prolongs the process of the spots coming out.
He also told us to use calamine cream and not the loition as it is much less drying-which will make the spots itch even more.
Hope your lo is ok x

Would the chicken pox virus give cold like symptoms? she seems to developing a cold over the last couple of days - again! Constant green nose - yuk! Also has a bit of a "smell" about her, if that makes sense...?! Almost smells ill...!

Yes, cold symptoms can go with Chicken pox. DS2 is very snotty still. Had a very sore throat on the third day of spots and a high temp.

I agree with the other posts and would add that your dd will be infectious until spots have scabbed over. My dd was 14m when she got them and piriton worked great for us.

Good luck, hope she's better soon

hayleybelly · 25/02/2008 21:22

thanks everyone for the advice! Not looking forward to seeing whats appeared in the morning!!

how much bicarb should i put in the bath? It won't aggrevate her skin will it? (blush)

I put a couple of table spoons of bicarb in. You can also use porridge oats, put a big wadge in an old stocking or sock, tie it to the taps so the water runs through it. Makes a nice soothing bath.

How is she this morning hayleyb? My DS2 has gone back to school today - 6 others in his class have it.

RosaIsRed · 26/02/2008 12:55
