I thought sedation would be actually unconscious?

I just had my endoscopy. I had the throat spray and the sedation and I was completely aware throughout the whole thing.

Gagging a lot, and it was so uncomfortable. It was horrible and not something I wanna repeat in a hurry

I’m surprised at the wide range of experiences and levels of sedation being described here.
This must be an extremely challenging experience if not properly sedated. If the procedure can’t be carried out because the patient is distressed - waste of resources, an appointment and a nasty experience for the patient.
I've had about 10 endoscopy procedures and have been properly sedated for each. I’ve been unaware of anything until back in recovery. I would never have one without sedation and I’d be asking questions of the team prior to going ahead. At my trust, this seems to be the norm.

In my case they will try again with a GA. So will be totally unconscious. But the appointment for that will not be until Jan 2026.

Which isn't great when they need to do biopsies for potential cancer.

I think I have some level,of resistance to anaesthesia and sedation generally. I certainly retained my memory of every second of both procedures, even the first where I had been given fentanyl. Red hired gene potential culprit.

My sister had sedation totally knocjed out for her! Woke up in recovery room - me not so lucky spray and sedation but was aware of everything - not even drowsy!!

The norm is that 'sedation' (if offered) is done via the endoscopist - so at best is midazolam/fentanyl - the exact values are set by the facility themselves (seem to need a FOI request to obtain these up front - noone has answered yet) - so there is some variety there. So it's understandable that some report it as fantastic where as others report it as being totally bollocks. I found that the actual internal cost to the NHS was about £394 - so fuck all and hence happy to waste it with multiple attempts.

Some folks are ultra tough and do it without - no idea how but is that the norm? Maybe it is.

Propofol is the next level up - but needs to be pre-arranged etc. as it needs an an anaesthetist - hence the extra cost/waiting list - or as I have experienced, bullshit to say that the first approach is just as good and everyone has mis-remembered.

Anyway, we are all different and I think this should be accommodated - risky if there are delays like Words says above "Which isn't great when they need to do biopsies for potential cancer."

So I think the vast majority of people are happy to try, most succeed, those that fail re-attempt, don't worry about it and all is well - but for the folks that are troubled from the start it's an uphill battle to be heard - like Words I too have a delay that's seen "as my fault" - over a year now but that's my choice.

Not related, but I happened to watch the 1960's Twilight Zone where William Shatner keeps seeing a gremlin on the wing of the plane - IIRC the flight attendant offers a chill pill as if it was normal solution to calm everyone down - we have these at our disposal and they cost sod all now - so why can't we do the same?

I’ve had two endoscopies, one just with the throat spray (horrendous) and one with sedation (don’t remember a thing)

GayPareeee · 07/07/2025 07:40

I had my second endoscopy and several polyps removed and biopsies taken last week in theatre under deep sedation.

I had a failed one in 2019 that they then had to deep sedate me for to try again.

This round is for suspected cancer and they did try to get me to do if without sedation but given this is the tenth procedure I've had in 2 years for cancer/suspected cancer there's is just no way. I am genuinely traumatised by hospitals/surgery.

It was all fine other than when I walked into theatre ready to be knocked out they'd forgotten to put a bed in do I just had to stand/sit on a stool while the anesthesists when through their or-flight checks (risks of bleeding out, patient risk for anesthesia etc etc) it was weird but oddly reassuring.

Woke up after in recovery not knowing a thing.

Have to get it all done again in a month and they're booking me straight back in for deep sedation in theatre.

My NHS Trust is much maligned and some areas are awful (2 years + gynae wait) but sound like I am really so lucky in how I have been listened to and treated. And I'm really sorry for those who aren't offered this.

Hi - thanks for sharing writingonthewall. For me, I can't square this in my head - if I had a horrific experience I am not sure I could ever try again despite "reassurances" - so hats off to you for persevering!

I guess I just thought it wouldn’t be bad with the sedation and I was right. I would never try again with the throat spray!
