I am breast feeding and have high blood pressure. GP prescribed medication twice but both unsuitable for nursing mothers. Apart from finding anew GP, does anyone have any advice? I am trying chinese herbal medicine now.

Cranial osteopathy can help but if you need to be on medication then you should get that sorted really. can you ask a pharmacist to suggest something that your GP could prescribe?? They are the whizzes on meds.

There are medications available which are suitable for breastfeeding. I am on MethylDopa- GP has put me on it as it's safe when pregnant/breastfeeding.

What did he prescribe? Some are quite nasty, they took me off Perindropril as it causes birth defects and not suitable for b/f.

I was on BP meds when BFing for the first six weeks postpartum (BP came down after that). I can't remember the name of it, but the OBs were fine with me taking it so I'm sure it was ok - and both dds are fine, too.

Personally, I'd pester the GP for a suitable drug - or get referred to the appropriate specialist who can prescribe appropriately!

I was also on methyldopa for last 2 months of pregnancy and for 12 weeks after and b/f whilst on them

loolop- how did you find it? I am dizzy but have been taking it for a couple of months now so not sure if it's that or something else.

It did used to make me feel light headed but when I discussed with GP he said it was more likely to be a temporary spike in BP than the medication. Think that was probably the case as got in less and less after DD was born as was PIH so started to come down naturally. They wouldn't take me off it until I had a 24hr BP monitor fitted (which was a REAL pain!) DD now 1 and BP normal

I think all those meds will say that you should not have them while bf but it is the drug companies way of protecting themselves as they were not tested on bfing women among other quite understandable reasons.

however, if you go to the Breastfeeding Network website, they have a very good drugline. You can look up the drugs you were prescribed and/or call one of their counsellors who will give you further information about the drug. sorry busy at the mo or would link fo ryou.
