Throwing up after tooth out

finally had tooth out. Was getting a little hungry and sore so had paracetamol and then a nectarine. Shortly after I had to throw up. Is this normal? I am not usually affected by anaesthetic- did ask for super high dose due to having ongoing trigeminal neuralgia. It’s been 3-4 hours since procedure and still feeling iffy but want to get on top of the pain and my stomach feels it needs something. Any suggestions?

The sickness could be a consequence of the trigeminal neuralgia as often severe pain can cause nausea and vomiting; likewise things like migraines sometimes cause it. It can also occur due to feeling a bit woozy and the combination of anxiety / not eating / adrenaline rush. I think you need something a bit blander but more substantial than a nectarine; although the standard advice is to stick to soft foods after an extraction so nothing grainy or solid gets into the clot. I would try some mashed potato or clear soup. You may also find ibuprofen is better than paracetamol for the pain although maybe not if you've been sick as your stomach will be sensitive.

Hi yeah I have ulcerative colitis so usually stick with to paracetamol. Had some soup and custard. Been ok since 9 pm. Was sick twice so maybe I was sensitive to the anaesthetic but never have been before - only had fillings before. See what kind of night I have and I hear pain is usually worse day after but should subside- fingers crossed!

Glad to hear you're better now and managed some food. I haven't heard of or seen people being sick in response to local anaesthetic. It was likely a mix of anxiety/ fatigue/ anticipation and weakness from low blood sugar- sometimes this manifests as nausea/ sickness. Hope you feel much better soon. (Qualifed dentist).
