ankle injury - any advice?

just over 2 weeks ago (Friday before last) my 6 month old ran into me at top speed resulting in me spraining my inner ankle (rare apparently). It didn't swell, and I could always walk on it with pain (previous sprains in the past swelled badly and couldn't walk on it for a few days).

The problem is that it still hurts just as much now as it did the day after I did it. I am still limping badly and wondering what to do now. It even hurts when I am sitting/laying down not doing anything with it.

Is there any point in going to the gp ? Would a chiropractor be any use ? Do I need an xray to see if I have broken anything ? Or should I just rest it as much as possible ?

that would be 6 month old border collie puppy - not a very mobile baby

Hmm, may just be a bruised muscle? these take ages to heal. Is it tender anywhere when you poke it?

throckenholt · 25/02/2008 14:34

no - not tender to the touch.

It seems to be inside my ankle just on the underside of it on the inside of my ankle.

It seems to get a bit better for a while and then stiffens up again and hurts most of the time.

For the first few days it was very stiff - almost fixed in one (wonky) position - now it seems to move reasonably normally but just hurts.

I assumed it would be healing by now - I did it on the 8th of Feb (just in time for half term ).

It depends what you've done. Breaks take 6-8 weeks, pulled muscles 2 weeks, tendons about 4, bruised muscles about 4. I'd go and see the GP, you've left it a bit late for an x-ray, where I live they won't do them after a week. It's hard to tell what you've done without seeing your foot so you should go and see the GP, he may send you for an x-ray anyway.

throckenholt · 25/02/2008 14:45

thnkas for that. I am just wondering if the gp will do anything or say just rest it (it is a hassle going to the gp so don't want to waste both oour times if there is no point).

I think that they will know what they are looking at, there's alot of muscles, ligaments and tendons in your foot. If you have pulled or torn one then you will need different treatment. He may say rest it, but you need to check that you have not torn a ligament because your foot will need to go in plaster. If it's still painful after 2 weeks you should go, it should not still be painful. If you don't fancy seeing the GP go and see the practice nurse, she'll have a look and if she thinks you need to see the doctor then she'll tell you. A strain or sprain should heal within 2 weeks, BMA says patients should go to the GP after 2 days if symptoms have not got any better. I'm sure he wouldn't mind seeing you.

Sorry Throck, my mind is full of images of a speeding baby causing mayhem in your home!!

Hope you find out what it is x

I had an upper ankle sprain last year (you'll probably find details if you search ) was able to weight bear but v painful . Rest etc didn't help and it just seized after a few weeks. Went to gp who refused to refer me on nhs but eventually did privately . 10 weeks of physio later and I was able to ski on it . Wish I'd had it xrayed at the time (it was a late Sunday evening so not exactly convenient)but the physio definitely helped.

thanks guys. I guess I need to fit make an appointment with the gp. I hope it doesn't need to be in plaster....

if it is only sprained they don't immobilise, opposite infact.

Sounds like what I did to my ankle in September. I was running after my toddler! I did the inside of my ankle too, more unusual and takes longer to heal. It was quite a bad sprain and was swollen and bruised. It still aches a bit now. I had to take 6 weeks off running, but didn't need a plaster.

For the first week or so I had to do a lot of exercises with my feet up moving my ankle. Such as writing the alphabet with my foot, and flexing it in all directions.

After that I had to do a lot of stretching and standing on one leg.

throckenholt · 25/02/2008 19:50

thanks Wallace - it helps to hear personal experience. I will try doing a few more exercises with it - and standing on one foot.

I had similar exercises from the physio. Flexing, balancing on one foot then heel raises which were excruciating to start with. You need to keep your knee locked, lean aginst something for support and start just by lifting the weight very slightly off the ground. You could refer yourself for a physio assessment (£35 ish) and see what they recommend
