Cradle cap

Does anyone know what causes cradle cap?

My DS had it til about 1 yr old and it looks like its suspiciously making a reappearance on a small patch of the top of his head.

And my new DD is getting it - is there anything preventative I can do?

I have detinox shampoo which is harsh but effective and tried the ointment on DS but that was too harsh and left him with sore skin.

any suggestions gratefully received.

As soon as I see any signs I use olive oil

Olive oil always worked the best for my 3. Rub some into the scalp a few hours before washing their hair and then comb it.

I was adviced to use olive oil as well, but it didn't always work, so tried aquoes[sp?] cream, and within the 1st week i noticed a big improvement, i have also recommended it to friends and they have also noticed it works better than olive oil.

My DD had terrible cradle cap, I used olive oil on it but when it got out of hand I found Head and Shoulders shampoo to be really effective. Also it is not too harsh on the skin.

Thank you all. Will try in that order, olive oil, then if necessary aqueous cream and finally head & shoulders!

I found just rubbing well with some conditioner or dentinox and then using the nitty gritty nit comb was fab

rebelmum1 · 25/02/2008 15:57

olive oil or almond oil does it, i'm sure it can keep recurring my dd has some atm. i think it's a type of eczema (don't quote me on it thou

Dalrymps · 25/02/2008 16:17

i put the oil on, wait 15mins, then use baby brush in a circular motion to get flakes off then wash with baby wash/shampoo and pat dry. this got most of it off, will do it again in a few days and that should be all of it

You need to soften it and then get it off. Dentinox shampoo might soften it, but you still need to scrape it off somehow. I found that the only way was to scrub with a nail brush (very regularly, little and often) or pick it off with my nails. Sounds grim, it was - but it worked. Little and often is key though if sensitive skin
