Dodgy new glasses

Lost my glasses last week so went to Specsavers to order replacement ones. The assistant told me that since I’d had my last eye test done at a different store, I’d need to get a new eye test in their store.

I did - and oddly (I didn’t click at the time as was very sleep deprived) after my test the optometrist/optician told me that one of my eyes had improved - looking back, how would they have even known that if they didn’t have my last prescription?!

Anyway, ordered some new glasses which I collected on Monday just gone. When I tried them on in the shop, I found my vision to be quite blurry with them on, objects looked distorted and I felt dizzy almost immediately. I told the assistant this, and she said it sometimes happens with new glasses & I’d probably get used to it in 1-2 days.

So I’ve worn them on and off for the last two days (I am short sighted but only ever wear them for long distance stuff, i.e i don’t wear them when looking at my phone/laptop as I don’t need them). Sadly I am having the same issues, I can’t wear them for longer than 10 minutes as I feel like I’m going to throw up. And even when I take them off, the dizziness persists and I can’t walk in a straight line.

I have a couple of questions, firstly, if I go to the branch which did my original eye test, could I ask them to replace the glasses I have with my original prescription? Or would they not do that since they’re not the store that gave me this current pair?

Alternatively, if they recommend I get another test, will I have to pay for it? And for the new lenses? Surely I shouldn’t but I’m not sure how all this works as never had a problem before.

Any advice appreciated, thanks!

You have quite a long period to get a refund I think it's 90 days. I'd go back to Specsavers and do that initially.
Then just ask the first store to reorder the previous ones . You don't need another test

I think you would have to go back to the store you got them from as they are sort of franchises. They should have used your other prescription if it was still in date though.p rather than making you get a new test. I get my sight test done in specsavers but my glasses done elsewhere, it’s your prescription.
You won’t have to pay for a retest.
You can maybe speak to the original store and ask them to firstly check the glasses have been made correctly, secondly see if any adjustments are needed to see if the frame angle or something improves the vision and thirdly compare the prescriptions from each tests and see how much they differ.

There is the GOC if you need to raise a concern.

I had this with my glasses, but I went from not wearing any to wearing them and when I did I felt travel sock. I rang them up
And explained and they made me an appointment. It was with specksavers. There is (I think 3months) time where you can go back if your glasses aren't right

Travel sick

What was the outcome of your appointment if you don’t mind me asking? was it an issue with the glasses themselves or did you need to get another test? And how long roughly did it take to get the new glasses?

Already gone almost 2 weeks without driving :( and I don’t think I can safely drive in these ones

I had another eye test and they lowered the prescription. I can't remember how long my new glasses took but it was the same amount as it normally takes (if that makes sense). When I rang they got my in for an appointment the next day.

I would go back to the store that supplied the glasses, and insist on them putting them on their machine- to check what prescription lenses have been put in.

I waited weeks for specsavers to replace the 'new' lenses in 2 pairs of my existing frames. Both didn't seem right, I was fobbed off, told they would settle etc. Turns out they have replaced my lenses- with the exact same bloody strength of lens- in both pairs!!! Incompetence isn't the word.

SpringSparrow · 12/07/2023 23:10

You would only need to get a new eye test if your previous prescription had expired, mine usually last for two years. I’ve always had good experience with Specsavers with their no quibble guarantee. I had to take one pair back because the lens wasn’t aligned correctly to my eyes, and another time they were happy to switch which pair of my glasses were going to be sunglasses. I’d go back and check when you last had a sight test and also get them to sort out whether the prescription is correct.

gogomoto · 12/07/2023 23:14

You need to go back to the glasses that supplied as I believe they are franchised (might be wrong, someone told me that). Eyesight can improve though, mine has in one eye

Snozzlemaid · 12/07/2023 23:38

I had varifocals recently from Specsavers that weren't right. The different vision sections weren't in the right place.
I called them and they made an appointment for me to go back and get them checked.
They were extremely helpful and sorted new lenses for me. The next pair were correct.
Give them a call and I'm sure they'll help fix them.

Snozzlemaid · 12/07/2023 23:39

And no, I didn't have to pay anything more.

Oh no, that sounds super frustrating. Hopefully they won’t fob me off otherwise I’ll be whipping out your story as ammunition!

Thanks everyone for your advice, you’ve all been really helpful. I’m going to go down to the store that gave me the glasses on Saturday and have them check over what @SweetAsIcedChocolate suggested.

Will update the outcome on this thread in case anyone is curious

Had nothing but issues with Specsavers. Got same prescription made up in four sets of frames and could see different vision in all of them. The machine even said all different prescriptions even though supposed to be the same. I wouldn't trust them.
