Does anyone else seem to suffer a lot from what I call low grade malaise?

I hope you know what I mean: just general slight illness from time to time, possibly associated with periods, possibly to do with age (I am in my 40s) maybe just to do with the everyday stresses of raising a family. Maybe a headache, maybe just overly tired, maybe feeling a bit sick, maybe just a sort of urgh feeling without being anything more specific.

Because that is how I feel at the moment and have been doing so for the last 5 days. I had a lovely chat with my mum this morning on the phone in which she told me she often felt that in her 40s but when she reached her 50s, she felt a lot more energetic and the non-descript ill feelings went too. This did reassure me that I am normal, but it would be nice to know if anyone else out there understands what I am going through.

i get that sick bleugh feeling before and during my period.

have you had your iron levels checked?
have you tried drinking more water?

it sounds like a hormonal thing tho for your mum if it stopped when she was in her 50s. maybe this will be the same for you too?

Thanks for responses. Yes I have had my iron levels checked and also my hormone levels. All normal. It sounds an incredibly archaic thing to say, but the general response seemed to be that I was experiencing normal woman's life . Doesn't that sound on a par with fainting fits and being confined during pregnancy?!

DoodleToYou, you will have to tell me who you used to be as I don't recognise your name. So what was the conclusion of your thread? Is there some magic pill that will make everything all right?

yeah. i get that.
my mum thought she was doing something similar - had felt under the weather for ages and mainly thought she needed a good kick up the bum. turned out to be a large fibroid thingy and she had a hysterectomy to get rid (being past menopause, and sterilized anyway, it was not too much of a big deal). shes much better now.

so if you wonder at all, its worth getting checked out imo.

BoysOnToast · 25/02/2008 10:32

ys DDG, what a rubbish response.

mind you, my pnd was described as normal tiredness for a couple of years too, so im not surprised.

margoandjerry · 25/02/2008 10:32

I'll watch this with interest. I feel the same. Knackered and achy and queasy a lot of the time.

I had the winter vomiting virus two weeks ago and although it only lasted one day, I still feel drained and not right. I was also ill at new year and just before Christmas ....

I would love to blame it on my busy life but actually, I work reasonable hours and don't really have too much to stress about. I've taken to going to bed at 9. I have just bought some Pharmaton and will see how that goes. Will report back if it's a miracle cure.

hana · 25/02/2008 10:35

yes absolutely, it's me.
am putting off going to doctor as I can hear the scenario
how old are you
do you have children
how old are they

well duh, it's no wonder your are tired, etc etc etc

I am tired ALL the time. Been trying to be in bed by 10, most nights I do this. I know my diet isn't great and I could use some more exercise, but just don't have the energy to start it all off

would be bit hesitant to use anything herbally I think
sigh

It is not exactly that I am ill all the time. In fact, the last bug to effect my family at New Year, a sort of cold/flu bug, only got dh and my 2 youngest. But I feel below par a lot of the time.

I know what you mean hana, about going to the doctor. I feel exactly the same. I know that if I mention the tenuous connection there sometimes is with my periods, my complaint will be written off as something to do with impending menopause. If I say I have 4 children to anyone, the immediate response is always "how on earth do you manage?" and the doctor would put my illness down to that (but they are actually very easy children and all at school now so it really is not a great burden, I don't think).

I have been to the doctor and I have had tests and they have all been ok. I am happy to be told that this is just something women endure - sooner be told that than be told I have something wrong with me. But, if that is the case, where are all my fellow sufferers? I don't see them in RL so I am looking for you online!

LOL DoodleToYou, I have just read your vitamin thread. Cod was helpful wasn't she?

Actually though, I tend to agree with her. I am not a great one for popping pills. I believe in healthy foods, drinking water, going to bed early (and I suppose I should add exercise but I would be a hypocrite if I did!) However, once when I went to a doctor, she recommended eating Burgen bread. There is a seed or something in it that is good for you. I did feel better once I started eating the bread regularly but I decided it was a coincidence and stopped buying it because my children would not eat it. Am just off to do the weekly shop. I think I will buy another loaf, just to see.

Oh yes, DG! I've been off & on antibiots since just before Xmas & feel constantly tired, apathetic, stressed, gloomy... with frequent headaches (most unusual for me). I'm in my 40s too & have felt much less energetic & basically 'old' since I had ds, almost 5 years ago. I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one.

Sometimes I think, 'well, that's it.' I'm in no way, shape or form 'young' anymore, no matter how many times I hear people going on about being young is a 'state of mind', blah, blah, blah. I dread the menopause, hate seeing physical signs of my aging (although v. slight - a few lines around my eyes, on my forehead, skin less firm & glowy, a few thread veins on my legs, etc). It's not fun, is it?

DualCycloneCod · 25/02/2008 18:32

i can see you dg

DumbledoresGirl · 25/02/2008 19:19

Hello Coddy.

Hey I agreed with you!

Actually, having said my symptoms were all non-descript and not indicative of a particular illness, my headache of the last 5 days now seems to have developed into something more specific. I am getting all sorts of aches and my neck feels sore suggestive of swollen glands.

Oh joy, so now I have got a real illness.

Sod it, I've got cystitis now and am on ABs. Not good with my medical history (which I won't bore you with). Feeling utterly miserable and O L D.

Oh and off to the dentist in half an hour. What a cr*p day.

Aw thanks for responding Doodle. I might have missed this had I not been doing too much searching on MN in order to avoid doing anything else!

Well I think I am on the mend. ABs are sorting out the cystitis and all my aches and muzziness are at least not getting any worse. I think I have some virus on top of the cystitis which has explained the headache I have had for a week now. I am still left wondering why I keep getting all these small viruses when my family don't.

But the good news! I went to the dentist yesterday and for the first time that I can remember did NOT need to see the sadistic hygienist!

Oh btw, Burgen bread isn't fancy. It is one of those loaves wrapped in plastic.
