dd who is now 4 had her mmr booster last friday, she was perfect and didnt even flinch when getting the injections, later on she had a rash on her left lower arm, i phoned gp who said to give her some piriton, which i did. she got up this morning and the whole area around the injection site on her left arm is swollen, red and hard. ive kept on giving her piriton because she said it is itchy. is the swelling/redness/hardness normal? she doesnt like me touching it but is fine generally- no fever or such like. when she had the jag the nurse (who was fantastic) said she would be fine and suffer no side affects (none of this happened when she had mmr at 1)
basically is it normal? do i carry on giving her anti-histemine (eek, spelling??) or do i take her to see the nurse tomorrow?

hello - not had mmr yet, but sure they'll be others here that can share experiences. My DD had a similar swollen/red/hard reaction to one of the combined jabs in her thigh when she was two(?) months old and we gave her calpol, or if she had been older we might have given her infant neurofen as a better anti-inflammatory.

It did go down, but we did also take her to the doctor who checked that her circulation wasn't affected by the swelling - extremities warm and pink, for example. We were told it wasn't 'normal/usual' but not to be worried.

I'm not a doctor, and if the swelling doesn't go down or you are at all concerned about your little girl then take her to see the doctor tomorrow, or even out of hours service if you're worried x

Could be cellulitis. Has the rash grown? How big is it?

mylovelymonster · 24/02/2008 20:52

thing is, reactions to jabs can vary so widely so difficult to compare and not good to advise suitable medication on the internet!
NHS direct might be a useful instant source of advice, but a face to face consultation where they can check her over is the best option.
Hope she's better soon xx

Draw around the rash so you can see if it grows. My son had this and it can be serious.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 24/02/2008 20:59

I am off now but google it and compare. I hope it isn't.

thanks, the original rash was on her lower arm and had gone this morning so its just they swelling hardness etc now at the top of her arm, she does have very sensitive dry skin and has had a few bouts of dermatitis on her hands (she has a steroid cream for this) so the rash could have been coinsidence.
the area is circular and about 6cm in diameter.
i will see what its like tomorrow and maybe take her to the nurse before nursery. on one hand im not too worried as she seems totally fine but it looks sore and uncomfortable.

Google away if you like, but diagnosing over the web is not a good idea. GP service just down the end of a phone and best if they see her if swelling isn't improving.

olsmum · 24/02/2008 21:06

ahhh! you cant say that then go!
ok, im definately getting it seen tomorrow and will check it if she wakes in the night. im a bit worried now.
