DD has had really gunky eyes today, is this the start of conductivitus (sp?).

Her eyes also look abit red, i just put it down to her having a crap nights sleep.

She also has an appiontment at the eye clinic tomorrow to check her sight and im not sure if i should take her now.

ring the eye clinic first thing and ask

squirt with breastmilk if available, wipe with boiled water and cotton wool (only use each piece for one wipe) if not

The only way I tell if its conjunctivitus is to clear it away with luke warm water and cotton wool,I don't think you are supposed to constantly wipe it away but clear it initially and if it comes back again in the eyes then it most probably is.

The main thing to do is to stop her from rubbing it away with her hands.

I would call the eye clinic tomorrow and explain the situation, if they are still gunky in the morning go to the doctors.

How old is she, I find piriton works well along with cooled boiled water.

MerlinsBeard · 24/02/2008 20:10

wipe from inner edge (near nose) to outer edge with a bit of cotton wool dipped in lukewarm water. If you need to wipe again, use a fresh piece each time and for each eye.

How old is she?

Squirting breastmilk i suspposed to help but if she is 5 and you haven't fed in a few years its not going to work!

twocutedarlings · 24/02/2008 20:21

Thanks for your replys

Yes it does come back if you wipe it away.

Shes 5 so BM not an option.

She has been rubbing her eyes quite alot today, but again i put it down to her being tired.

WOAA, Thanks for the tip about piriton i will give it ago if need be.

Our ds has been same. Took to docs on Fri because I didn't know if it was ok to clean it up myself. She said clean up with cooled boiled water but gave us eye drops to use if it got worse - they are called 'infected eyes' and I think you can buy them over the counter.

hotbot · 24/02/2008 20:28

phamacist advise is usually tip top for this too, also if it is cinjuctivitis you can give chloramphenicol eye drops if over 2 yrs old.
sometimes phamacists as good as drs, if struggling for a gp appt. = not a pharmacist by the way.

Hi hotbot, yes i rembember my younger DD having the above drops before. But i didnt realise you could get it over the counter.

We actually have a chemist a couple of miles away that open while 10.30 tonight, ive called them and they have them in. So ive sent DH out to get some. .
