I had a baby 4 days ago but it's been 7 days since I last opened my bowels!

I've tried all different things and nothing is working!!!! Is this serious? What can I do? I'll call dr in the morning again

Speak to a pharmacist, they will be able to help. However I can confirm that dulcolax is very effective. God help you if you take a double dose!

Congratulations on your new baby.

Get some Movicol or Laxido. Start on a high-ish dose, say four sachets at night. It’s a stool softener, which is exactly what you need when you’re very bunged up and have just given birth.

Don’t bother with Lactulose (ineffective and causes awful wind) or senna (the cramps will be terrible).

Astromelia · 06/07/2023 23:24

Congratulations!

Have you tried any medication?

Most effective way would be to use an enema to get things going, then probably regular oral laxatives like laxido/movicol for at least a few days to keep it going. You can buy micro lax enemas on Amazon, and laxido in the chemist. But it would probably be best to ask your GP.

In the meantime drink lots of water, eats fruit. Did you try coffee?

If it’s ready but you can’t go you need some glycerin suppositories from the pharmacy/ supermarket. Lie on your left side, pop them in, hang on 20 minutes then go to the loo.
If it’s further up bloating etc then take some califig syrup, laxido sachets (can’t taste them in straight orange juice) or Dulcoeaze (sp?) capsules. Failing that a couple of senna or Dulcolax

Infracat · 06/07/2023 23:40

Suppository was the only thing that worked for me. It was an awful time. I wish they would tell you about this after giving birth. I make a point of telling all my pregnant friends.

Sunshineandrainbow · 06/07/2023 23:43

Try one duculax. Never fails with me.
Don't double up though.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/07/2023 23:46

Another vote for laxido/movicol (same stuff, different brands, laxido is usually cheaper). You can buy it at a pharmacy. Really works.

BabsDylan · 06/07/2023 23:49

@SingingWaffleDoggy the glycerine suppositories are a revelation aren’t they?

Much better than Laxido/Movicol for my dd when she had constipation.

100% recommend these too, you will be sorted out in 20 mins op

I had bad constipation once when dehydrated, which of course you could easily be after having a baby. If you are, fibre can actually make it WORSE, which I unfortunately didn't know at the time. Might be worth having a litre of water, preferably warm as it expands your blood vessels.

Congratulations on new baby btw!

iwantavuvezela · 07/07/2023 00:34

I remember this! I wish they would have told me that the cocodomal I was taking caused such severe constipation! Please get something from GP/ chemist which will make you feel much better!
