Foot doctor/podiatrist? What have I done?

Can anyone help me with my stupid foot please?

I have EDS - it makes all my joints unstable and every now and again I do a ‘big’ injury that takes a few years to get better.
About 6 years ago I stretched whilst sitting on the sofa and my foot cracked across the top very loudly. It was exceptionally painful, I found it hard to walk for a few weeks and I went to A and E for an unremarkable X-ray. I was essentially sent away and told that there was nothing wrong with me. It took a couple of years to get better, but it did - although it sometimes feels like the middle of my foot ‘comes apart’ with a soft click that hurts like hell.

In March we went on holiday. I was mooching around in the pool standing on tiptoe and it went again. Really went. It hurts a lot of the time, it’s swollen (sometimes) in two stripes across the top of my foot and it clicks strangely when I walk. Being barefoot makes it worse, Birkenstocks support it so I wear them most of the time. It doesn’t hurt in the morning, by the evening it’s swollen again and I’m hobbling. It now has a boney bump on the top of it too.

Please don’t tell me off, or that obviously I should go to the doctors/hospital/somewhere. I just wondered if anyone can hazard a guess what might be wrong with my foot?

I had foot pain a few years ago. Really couldn't even put it to the floor. After a couple of days I went to minor injuries who said ligament damage, it just needs time.

Two weeks later I was still in agony and went to my regular osteopath with another issue. He had a good feel of my foot and found the the cuboid bone was dislocated, put it back and there was instant relief.

I don't know of your issue is similar, but I'd highly recommend seeing an osteopath if you can. My body takes quite a bit of abuse and he can generally fix me.

It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a dislocation, loads of my joints do it. Thanks for the osteo recommendation, I’ll give it a whirl.

A podiatrist is a good idea, they're thoroughly trained in foot anatomy and assessment of injuries and can arrange further imaging if needed. Flowers

Hmm. There’s a podiatrist up the road, I’ll give them a ring and see if they have any cancellations. It’s so sore, it’s driving me mad!

I say this gently- as someone with EDS- sometimes we really do have to go to hospital and have it assessed.

Yes it's incredibly frustrating when they say there's nothing wrong, but it needs to be checked. Emphasise that it is more likely to be tendon/ligament rather than bone so if nothings on the X-ray, it still needs further assessment.

I've had times where they made me feel useless for going, but equally times where I've found out later that I really should've gone and end up regretting it years later.

Please get it checked x

Is it bursitis (not sure how to spell that), I have that and its really painful. It was diagnosed through MRI

TheMousePipes · 07/07/2023 10:19

I’ve booked the podiatrist as a first line to get it looked at today. @NoCoincidence - I know what you’re saying, and I know it needs assessment but last time I took it to A and E I got properly told off for wasting time and resources. It made me cry, and I’m not a crying kinda girl normally. The same happened when I saw a consultant regarding the slow healing hip dislocation- except he gave me a bollocking in front of other patients because appointments are scarce and I had wasted his time when someone could have benefited more. That was shit too.
So I tend to just try and heal at home. I do concede that I need to see someone though. Just hoping not to get shouted at today.

@bellac11 bursitis sucks doesn’t it? I have it in my hips and it drives me mad! I hope yours is getting better.

Well…
I saw the podiatrist and he said that I needed to stop wearing the Birkies for a month to allow my foot to stabilise and heal.
So I did.
And he was right!
I’m allowed to wear them again now but he said my foot was trying to heal into two different positions and to wear flat shoes with no arch support for a while.

Mind blown - food healed.

That’s very good news OP. I used to love Birkenstocks had them in many colours. They completely ruined my feet. i got plantar fasciitis and problems with my toes.I can’t wear them or anything like them anymore. They are very stiff and inflexible so maybe it was that? I know some people do swear by them for comfort.

SwedishEdith · 14/08/2023 20:21

What was the injury though, what was cracking?

I love Birkenstocks for when I have knee pain because I feel my joints reset into the right positions when I wear them. And a physio recommended them as well. However, I bought some Birkenstock trainers recently and I can barely walk in them. The top of my foot just seemed to cramp up. I've very flexible feet with high arches. But very flat shoes knacker my knees.

I had damaged my lis franc joint apparently. It still goes clunk every now and again but it’s so much better.
