For over a week I've had the feel feeling of something stuck in my throat, it was my chest now its more my throat! Its driving me mad but it's more worrying as what it might me..
I have no heartburn.
It doesn't seem to be there in a morning but as soon as I bloody eat it never really goes!
Been to the docs as was worried about serious issues & have lansoprazole for 2 weeks as could be GERD.. ITS been nearly a week and although it has seemed better today in the day now in the evening it's really annoying me!
Has anyone had this and it not be anything awful.
Thanks

Look up globus, it’s the sensation of something stuck in your throat

Chersfrozenface · 06/07/2023 19:37

When I had that when I was young, and insisted on going to the GP, it turned to be a scratch inside my throat (pharyngeal abrasion in medical parlance).

It was caused by some piece of hard edged food. Took quite a while to heal, but at least once I knew what it was I stopped panicking.

I've had this before and it really felt like something was stuck. Every time I took a drink I could feel the water 'pushing it down'. The gp told me it was globus and didn't even look in my throat. I was on omeprazole for a different reason and it didn't help. It has disappeared but it took ages and I think it may have been a scratch like the pp. I think it will go away, op, but if not, go back and let them know it hasn't.

Ps it always felt worse in the evening and I think that's because you're not so distracted!

Bubblyb00b · 06/07/2023 20:01

I had this, was told its to do with indigestion or stress, or both. I even had a scan for it, was so worried! Most likely a digestive issue, acid reflux probably. Omeprazole might help.

miserableoldmoanbag · 06/07/2023 20:08

It sounds like Globus - which is caused by anxiety or reflux (and often both!).

It means the throat muscle tense up (as a reaction to the anxiety or the acid aggravating them) and leaves you with the very real sense of something in the throat. A lump or something left behind etc.

You could try blowing a wide straw in to water to make bubbles - that can help relax the next muscles. Lots of relaxation if you can.

If it lasts for a few weeks with no improvement, you should be seen by ENT to scope you and check if anything is going on down there.

Sounds like globus sensation due to reflux - lots of people have silent reflux with no other symptoms but this feeling you describe. I have a lot of patients with this and advise to have medication from GP but to also consider gaviscon as well as it acts differently to omeprazole. Also limit/omit acidic and spicy foods & caffeine from your diet as that can make it worse.

ChineseFakeaway · 06/07/2023 20:11

I had this a few months ago, it was absolutely bloody awful. Never had anything like it before. Google suggested globus and it seemed like I might be stuck with it for a looong time.

Then, thankfully, it just went away. Hopefully you’ll have the same experience 💐

I had this and was prescribed omaprazole. Had a gastroscopy and was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.
Meds have sorted it. I think also the more I worried, the worse it got.
As an aside if you have to have a gastroscopy, I recommend to always have the anaesthetic.

DéjàMoo82 · 06/07/2023 20:28

I have this and was eventually diagnosed as having a hiatus hernia after an endoscopy. It can be caused by reflux. Mine was mostly caused by reflux at night while I was asleep and so I didn't necessarily notice heartburn.

DownNative · 06/07/2023 20:43

Sounds like silent reflux which is different to acid reflux. The enzyme, Pepsin, ends up outside the stomach and in throats where it numbs throat lining before dissolving acidic food. The lump in throat sensation is one symptom of this and a persistent cough can be another.

I've found lifestyle changes such as avoiding acidic food, no carbonated drinks, caffeine and so on makes a huge difference. I drink loads of water and only decaffeinated tea, for example. Alcohol makes it worse, so none of that.

More information is in The Acid Watchers Diet by Dr Aviv.

Thank you everyone for your I have been meaning to reply.

I had started to put it down to globus as when I was focused on it ,it seems to ease, also when I've been on a night out or drank alcohol I never noticed it so thought it must be that.

Anyway just had a phone all from the doctors & have when I did a stool sample last week they have found a bacteria & I' not been treated for h plyori...
Had ot not been for another post on here I wouldn't think it was that as I didn't have any symptoms but this throat thing is a symptom.

Treatment is 3 medication so will start Tommorow when they have them in stocks on my chemist.
