High bilirubin level

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone has experience of a high bilirubin level coming back on a blood test. It's come back as 33, NHS says normal range is 0-20. Obviously this is high but I've no frame of reference as to whether it's worryingly high?

Doctor has made face to face appointment for me for first thing tomorrow so not long to wait but not sure what this means/what would happen next - more tests?

I have this (Although my levels were higher) and got diagnosed with Gilbert’s Syndrome. It’s never required treatment or anything and never causes any problems and is apparently the result of a genetic mutation (my dad also has it!)

Were the rest of your bloods okay? In my case, If I remember correctly, I had to repeat the test a couple of times along with some other bloods and the doctor checked something to do with my eyes in a an appointment

This might be helpful to have a read up of 😊

Gilbert's syndrome

Read about Gilbert's syndrome, a genetic hereditary disorder where slightly higher than normal levels of bilirubin build up in the blood, causing jaundice.

Thank you so much for the reply @penguinsss !

That's reassuring to know - a quick Google suggests all sorts of scary things!

The rest of the LFT were fine but I'm pretty severely anaemic, so I'm sure that'll be treated too!

Gilbert's Syndrome is an interesting Google, I'm hoping it is just something like this which seems harmless from what you've said! Just worried it was an indicator of something else!

DH has Gilbert's Syndrome, and he's never had any issues. I believe it can sometimes make people look slightly jaundiced, so it is good to have it properly diagnosed and on your notes.

High serum bilirubin can be a sign of haemolytic anaemia. Have you had any tests for possible causes of your anaemia?

CactusUmbrella · 06/07/2023 12:50

@NoNotHimTheOtherOne I've just seen the doctor and he's ordered urgent blood tests to look into cause of the anaemia.

I'm severely low in iron, folate, B12 and ferratin!

Hopefully I'll find out what's causing all this, and hopefully it'll be easily and quickly treated and/or harmless!

Thank you for all replies, much appreciated.
