Vertigo

I've been suffering from vertigo for the past few days. Thursday I couldn't get out of bed. Now it's much better unless I try to do some of the exercises that supposedly help, eg Brandt-Daroff exercises or get into certain positions - leads to room spinning, nausea etc. Horrific basically. Been taking medication. Anyone have experience of this? Did it get better. How long did it take? Thanks everyone.

I have BPPV and I think it's triggered by hormones, I had it for months after I did (failed) IVF and then I get it again around my period every month. The exercises work for me. I also get tinnitus and migraines. I also have thyroid disease which I think contributes. Turned 39 and fell to bits, basically! I don't think it's going to go away so I'm making sure our next house is a bungalow as my elderly neighbour has it too and sometimes she says it's so bad so has to stay upstairs for days.

@Starrrz
Yes I wear a hearing aid in that ear - I have normal hearing in the other. I was in my very early 50s when it started. The hearing loss got gradually worse with each attack. I get very occasional benign positional vertigo but that's a non-event compared with Menières session! And I don't think the two are linked at all.

Ive opened this up to see if anyone got any relief?
9 weeks ago I had alot of travelling. Came home to a motion type dizziness, no sickness. Thought it would pass but hasn't. I've had so many medications from sturgeon, citrizine, betahistine even proponol for anxiety and I even tried an ssri but nothing helped. The ssri was awful. Bloods OK. Saw ent said ears ok. Got an mri but not holding much out there. Feel this weird pressure in neck and shoulders like being pulled down. Lack of sleep. Awful when sitting especially.
obviously done lots of different exercises and manoeuvres Any help??

Very similar to you, Dr thinks menieres disease. It's definitely worse when I'm premenstrual. Currently feeling bloody awful.

Hi

Sorry to hear your feeling awful.

Theyve now said they pretty much think mine is Mdds. Mal da embarquement syndrome.

Mine started from travel.

I'm still going through this at week 12 but better days on and off now.

I've been prescribed clonazepam 0.5mg once a day and also amitriptyline.

I tried so many different things and meds.

The gravitational pull and swaying is just so annoying but better than it was.

There is also pppd that can start from allsorts of things.

I also do vestibular daily exercises too.

Eat and drink well plus walk.

Oh and to say it is so bad the day my period arrives!

farmerboy · 14/08/2024 09:29

Sorry you are all suffering. I get BPPV and it's definitely hormone related. The Eplay manoeuvre is a magic bullet for me and my dr has used me as a training aid for his fellow health care professionals as he says I'm a super responder to the treatment. Getting in to see him when I have an attack is more tricky. I'd definitely say try it out.

@Pixie1771 - a while since you posted but just wondering how you're getting on?

I just did a search on vertigo as I'm currently suffering. Had my first ever attack in May which lasted a couple of days and had hoped it would be a one-off.

@BeadedBubbles I've just come.across your post after having two days of vertigo accompanying a virus......stomach bug.
Absolutely horrendous, it was far worse than the vomiting and overall fatigue.
I honestly can't imagine how anyone would cope if that was a daily thing.
I'm really hoping that as I've kept all my food down today that my head will be fine in the morning.

Can I ask what happened to your drivers licenses? Given that it’s vertigo I’m worried that they’ll take mine away. This just started for me and it hasn’t come up in discussions with my gp as of yet.

I don’t know what’s causing it for me, the manoeuvres don’t work at all and I am also being investigated for a cardiac condition (see my other threads) so might be related to that.

Edited to add that I obviously don’t drive during episodes!!!
