When you are recovering from illness is it best to rest or push yourself?

I have been unwell for several weeks and just finished three lots of antibiotics. I am still tired and not back to normal yet.

Should I go with how I’m feeling which is just wanting to stay home not doing a lot or is it better to push myself and go for a walk or go to the shops or do the hoovering?!

I’m thinking it isn’t good for my mood to not be doing anything. On the other hand I feel really rubbish if if I do too much. What do you think is best?

I was very ill in the past year, and when I was finally out of hospital saw my GP who advised me to take it slow.

I also read a book called Recovery which is written by a GP called Gavin Francis. He feels that we don't take recuperation seriously enough and that years ago we'd have been sent off to a sanatorium to recover after illness.

I spent many weeks sitting on a deck chair in the garden, having naps and with occasional visits from friends. Some days it was enough to get washed and dressed and prepare some healthy food.

I'd say go slow and you will get there eventually. I'd be more concerned with stretching yourself and settling things back. You'll know when you're able to do more.

Good luck!

Definitely rest. But get fresh air, so maybe a short walk
