I'd like to know too

@ZigZagRainbow
Did you know you've commented on your own post?

Not sure about a toddler but my 5 week old took about 10 minutes of breast milk and was completely fine afterwards

KateyCuckoo · 01/07/2023 09:03

My newborn cried for a couple of minutes and was fine after a feed also. Can't imagine you'd need any time off work.

Totally different for a toddler as it’s done under general anaesthetic.

Really, can’t believe they will give a GA for a simple tongue tie, doing that will take longer than the tongue tie cut itself. The actual risk of the GA is more than the procedure itself

Tomeeornottomee · 01/07/2023 09:23

Yes they do give a GA for tongue tie in a toddler. Mainly because of it being bloody traumatic if someone was going to clamp your tongue and essentially snip the under part with big scissors. How would you prepare a young child for that? DS was 3 when his was done. I would say take 2 days off. Obviously, 24 hrs to recover from the GA and then another day to make sure they're OK and give them some comfort and a bit of spoiling.

Babdoc · 01/07/2023 09:28

A ten minute GA really doesn’t need two days recovery! The child will be fully conscious in a matter of minutes afterwards, the procedure is about the most minor op possible, and they will be eating, drinking and discharged home no more than a few hours later.

Usually not, but some react badly if a 1st GA you don't know what to expect. I'd perhaps pre-warn work I may need a second day depending how he is/how late in the day was the op.

Selfesteem23 · 01/07/2023 10:21

The day of the procedure and the day after to ensure recovery/pain is ok. Even though a short simple procedure and only under for a short time. It’s still a stressful for both child and parent. The child may be sore too!

ZigZagRainbow · 01/07/2023 10:22

I'm only interested to hear people's actual experiences. If your toddler hasn't had one and you're not a nurse or doctor I'm not taking your word for it I'm afraid. It is completely different to a baby.

At least one of the previous posters is a doctor.

ZigZagRainbow · 01/07/2023 12:59

@Pinkywoo should I guess which one?

@Tomeeornottomee thank you.

I know babdoc is, not sure about other posters.

DressDilemma · 01/07/2023 15:14

DS1 had a tongue tie procedure at 1.5 yo under GA. The GA wore off Withings 15-20 mins after the procedure and was a bit disoriented during the journey home. He was okay within the day though and was eating and drinking normally by the evening.

DS2 had his procedure at 2 months. No GA and was okay pretty much immediately after. Could not tell if he was sore because he was breastfeeding soon after and seemed to be in good spirits. Did not even cry much at all during the procedure.

Kindofcrunchy · 01/07/2023 15:41

@ZigZagRainbow Can I ask why you're getting done and, is it through the NHS or private?

We have a 3.5yo with a suspected tt and hoping to have it snipped asap but not sure how you go about this once they're this age. We had our 5mo tt snipped a few months ago and it bloody grew back!!

@Tomeeornottomee thank you.

Why are you being so rude to people trying to help you? My DS had this procedure but I'm not going to tell you about it because of how rude you've been in your last 2 posts.

Well, you did ask the question so I would guess you'd like to know the answer Grin

Badbudgeter · 01/07/2023 16:03

A bit younger than yours but my second child had a tongue tie cut under anaesthetic at 9 months he’d had a previous tongue tie cut and it’d healed with lots of additional scar tissue and become thick and fleshy. The surgeon who had done the original snip thought it’d be better to pop him under so she could do a good job the second time.

NHS does do tongue tie under anaesthesia.

Babdoc · 01/07/2023 16:21

Thanks, Pinkywoo!
OP, I’m a retired hospital doctor who specialised in anaesthetics for 36 years. So yes, I do know just a teeny bit about paediatric post op recovery… Grin

Tomeeornottomee · 01/07/2023 21:33

I never said it takes 2 days to get over a GA, however I'm pretty sure that the advice is they should rest at home for 24 hours with a responsible person caring for them? I advised the 2nd days as they may need extra reassurance, cuddles and snuggles. Also it took about 3 days before my DS would even consider eating anything crisp like toast.. mashed up egg and sift bread went down well...as did the soft scoop ice cream and flavoured milk.

ZigZagRainbow · 04/07/2023 20:22

@Kindofcrunchy at one point I looked into going private but I couldn't even find anywhere that did it for toddlers.

I had a few months of GP saying it was upto health visitor to refer him and Health Visitor saying it was upto to GP to refer. Eventually GP made the referral to a local hospital but he told me he had to make a lot of phone calls before anyone would agree to receiving it.

Oh what a nightmare about it growing back! Will they cut it again? Poor thing.

Both my sons had theirs done. First son at age 1.5 years…. Took so long to wait and he is 11 now and it totally grows back!
my second son had his fine at 3 weeks… never grew back.

first was fine under general aneasthetic and recovered fine just sleepy for a few days. Second sine recovered in Hours and fed within seconds! Easy procedure and doesn’t hurt really if they do it at a young age x
