Hi All,
My mum has recently been diagnosed with advanced Liver Cirrhosis and doctor is suggesting for Live liver doner or cadaveric liver transplant. My mum is not very strong internally anyway and I am not sure if it is worth going through this all. And got following questions in my mind.
1- Does this Liver transplant thing work? Though there are lots of doctors explanations and all on the social media but I have not heard anything ever from the person who ever had the liver transplant or from doner.
2- Does this really give extra years of life?
3- How soon doner can expect to go to work as I will have to take time off from work?
4- Any other information which I must know.
Thanking you all in advance.

If you are next of kin there will be a transplant coordinator who will answer these questions for you. Obviously it's a huge operation not without risks, but yes, of course it works.

I don't think live liver transplants are done very often - are you in the UK?

A relative of mine had a liver transplant in December and is just about back to some semblance of normal now. She isn't thinking about returning to work for another 6 months.

It’s a potentially lifesaving operation that sometimes has excellent results.

The questions you ask are really important and I don’t think anyone online can answer them reliably. Please ask to speak to the clinical team looking after your mum, or the transplant co-ordinator.

There is some information on this website but of course it’s general and not specific to your situation. <a class="break-all" href="https://britishlivertrust.org.uk/download-pdf/?title=Transplant%20guide%20for%20family%20&%20carers&downloadurl=britishlivertrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Transplant-guide-for-family-carers_web_Aug-2022.pdf" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://britishlivertrust.org.uk/download-pdf/?title=Transplant%20guide%20for%20family%20&%20carers&downloadurl=britishlivertrust.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/Transplant-guide-for-family-carers_web_Aug-2022.pdf

A good friend had a cadaveric liver transplant last year. It was a tough operation and it took him a couple of months to get over the surgery and he is much better now but still not at ‘normal’ strength. He also has to take a lot of pills everyday that suppress his immune system and so has to be exceptionally careful around crowds of people and small children so he doesnt pick up colds and other illnesses. I think part of the problem is that to qualify for the transplant he had to be very ill to start with and so he is trying to climb back up that hill as well as recover from the actual surgery
