Funny raised mole thing on my upper back. Trying to work out how urgent it needs seen.

I have noticed a funny raised scabby thing on my upper back/shoulder area. Doctor appointment is in a months time. Wondering if anyone on here has any knowledge of whether it looks a bit suspicious/dodgy. Will try and attach a photo.

Quite possibly a sebhorreic keratosis, which is quite benign and usually associated with ageing (I’m covered in them at 76!) But do get it checked for your peace of mind.

Harpings · 27/06/2023 11:23

Thanks. I have googled that and think it looks likely. I think malignant are normally darker?

Seborreic keratosis. Annoying as all fuck, and unsightly, but benign. Your GP could freeze or cut it off if it’s bothering you, but it will probably grow back and could leave a scar or white patch on the site.

Thanks

Are you me?😂

I have one exactly the same and in the same place too! I thought it was a seborrheic keratosis and in fact the nurse at GP confirmed it when she saw my back for another reason

I call it my Barnacle

Harpings · 27/06/2023 12:15

That’s reassuring. Never heard of them before!

I've got one of those on my leg. Ugly fucker.
Don't recommend shaving over the top of it by mistake.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 27/06/2023 12:20

I’ve got one on my leg too 🙄🙄🙄 tried all sorts on it , still hanging onto me !!!

GettingStuffed · 27/06/2023 12:34

I've quite a few, some have darker areas too, I found that they move around, not literally, as they go and them come up somewhere else, most of mine are around bra area

Hbh17 · 27/06/2023 12:51

Goodness, I have loads of those and have done for years - never occurred to me that a GP would be remotely interested!

Harpings · 27/06/2023 13:44

Hmm maybe don’t need gp appointment afterall

Can you send a pic over to your GP? I did with something similar. They still wanted to see me but it was keratosis. And while a lot of cancerous growths are dark (and patchy) I had one on my face that was like a small white wart. When removed and biopsied it was precancerous.

Harpings · 27/06/2023 16:23

I asked gp about sending photo but they said they don’t do that any more is was just doing covid. So I need a face to face appointment. I would have been more than happy with just sending a photo as think that would have been quicker

Does anyone go to get their body checked for moles? Used to live in Australia and it's very common there. I had a pre-c one removed from my arm (which was invisible to my eyes). As I've spent a long time in the sun I'd like an all over check but don't know where to go?

Harpings · 27/06/2023 16:37

Sounds like a sensible concept 25sheets. Afraid not sure if there is such a thing here

There is but you have to pay for it. For example the Mole Clinic in London.

Chewbecca · 27/06/2023 21:28

DH has lots of those scaly patches on his torso.

I do have my moles checked periodically & a full set of photos taken which are then compared electronically to the previous photos - mole mapping. It’s private, run by a dermatologist. I think I pay about £150. NHS will monitor individual moles with regular photos but not en masse.

Where do you get this done please?

Billericay in Essex

And me

Plus 3 or 4 little ones on my collar bone

One was removed as it kept catching on my bra strap and bleeding, leaves quite a scar if they're removed

I tried hydrocortisone on the one on my leg. Didn't make a blind bit of difference (pharmacist told me off tho)

Thank you. I had no idea. Am going to make an appointment.

25sheets · 20/07/2023 15:45

Thanks to you @lieselotte I had an appointment at The Mole Clinic about 2 weeks ago. There were 3 "moles" they were concerned about and one was "urgent" (it just looked like a dark patch to me). I saw the outpatient skin clinic at hospital today and I'm waiting for an outpatients department for the plastic surgeon to remove 2 x moles within the next 2 weeks.

KnittedCardi · 20/07/2023 16:06

I've got hundreds of the bugggers. Sometimes you can just scratch them off, and they go, or file them down. I have had them scrapped off, burnt off, and frozen off. Scrapped and burnt didn't come back, the frozen ones some have and some haven't. I don't really have any scars though, maybe different skins react differently. I'm currently trying Tea Tree Oil on one behind my ear, I can't see it, but it is really big, and seems to be coming off in bits (sorry, sporner corner here I come!).

Oh wow. Well I hope that all goes well and you don't need any follow-up.

When I went, I had a pink lesion I was concerned about, they didn't think it was cancerous but suggested that I follow it up and I had to use a cream on it.

But interestingly I have a small patch on my cheek like a flat mole, and they said I should keep an eye on that, not the big fat ugly ones in other parts of my body!

All the best!
