Unusual dental pain? Dentist has no idea what it is…

I’m posting this in desperation to see if anyone has ever experienced similar as it’s driving me mad! Apologies for the length of the post.

Last year at a check up, my dentist told me I was showing signs of grinding my teeth. She wasn’t fussed about it but I asked for a night guard as my DDad was a grinder and ended up having to have some of his teeth crowned due to the damage. I started wearing it last October and a month later woke up to feeling like my left front tooth was hitting my bottom tooth when talking and eating. Then I started getting what I can only describe as a feeling of pressure in some of my teeth and upper gums- I noticed when I wash my face and press either side of my nose, the feeling of pressure was there, as well as into my gums below and then my teeth. The best way I can describe it is like having something stuck between your teeth? I get it in my front teeth and random teeth all over my mouth (top and bottom) but it’s worse in my top teeth. I wear my night guard religiously. Over the past few weeks all my top left teeth have had this feeling of pressure in them and my gums feel tender. They can be like this one day but not the next, it’s intermittent. Dentist says my teeth look fine, except for a crack in one of them (she doesn’t want to repair it at the moment 😳). She hasn’t x-rayed them, just declared that she doesn’t know what it is and is referring me to the hospital. So now I have a long wait to be seen there but I’m left with this issue and no solution? I’ve started getting shooting pains in the affected teeth when I clean them, which makes me anxious. Has anyone else had this issue? I’m starting to wonder if the night guard has affected my bite and this is what is causing the issue… 🤔

I would also suspect the night guard. It could be a poor fit.

It’s custom fitted by my dentist, it’s a nice close fit and feels comfortable BUT I see conflicting opinions on whether they are the best thing for grinding so that’s why I am wondering if it’s that as my dentist seemed surprised that I am having all these issues considering I wear it every night without fail.

It could be Bruxism (grinding as you mentioned) the guard should stop the damage to the teeth but the actual pain of bruxism might not stop ( according to my max facial surgeon)

It's positive you have been referred to the hospital and hopefully they can do an MRI and x rays to confirm there is nothing underlying.

As far as treatment goes if it is bruxism, is Botox, pain management and facial exercises. Dr Adam Fields has some good exercises on YouTube that might help

Best wishes OP x

@Sickandtiredofbeingsick did it solve

AnxiousFTM · 06/11/2023 16:23

@Sickandtiredofbeingsick did you find out what was causing it? I’m having similar teeth issues, especially feeling the pressure like something is between my teeth

LookingForPurpose · 06/11/2023 16:32

Sinus problems? I suffer terribly with sinus issues and my nose doesn't have to feel blocked or even be especially gunky for me to feel the pain. Side says it's like my teeth have grown a size over night, since days it's sore to touch my face, or it could feel like a heart beat through my entire upper jaw. It's always much worse when I've developed a polyp or two aswell but can suddenly just stop for weeks at an end.

AnxiousFTM · 06/11/2023 17:49

That sounds horrible for you @LookingForPurpose what do you do to treat it, do you need antibiotics?

Night guards definitely can affect your bite. Which one are you wearing?

LookingForPurpose · 06/11/2023 18:03

@AnxiousFTM

I've had surgery to clear out my sinus, hard steroids, a deviated septum repair, I have to irrigate my sinus daily and yes, I go through around 3-6 courses of antibiotics a year. It's brutal

FoxClocks · 06/11/2023 18:08

Personally I would stop wearing the night guard for a while and see if the discomfort stops. If it does but you are still concerned about the teeth grinding then look at getting it refitted.

@AnxiousFTM look at trigeminal nerve see if your symptoms match

This. I had similar, and in the end it was TGN. It's awful - but nothing to do with my teeth.

Deedoo · 07/11/2023 17:02

@NameChangePoP i know awful disease what helped you

I take Amitriptyline for it, it's the only thing that touches it. I have flare ups when I need to use it for the pain.

Deedoo · 09/11/2023 14:41

@NameChangePoP was it caused by dental

Thenewnewme · 09/11/2023 14:43

I’m also suggesting sinus pain. When I have hayfever my top teeth hurt.
