Sticky eye - any tips

Hi - my 4 wk old ds has had sticky eye since Monday. The HV said to use cool boiled water every half hour or to use breast milk on it. Have tried both but it just seems to be getting worse. Has anyone any other advice on what could clear it up.

Cooled, boiled water with salt in it, was what I was always told.

and a new cotton ball each time?

don't be delicate with the bm - a good squirt till it runs out the corners (I found it easiest to do with dd laid flat on the changing mat)

you can always make a gp appt for monday and cancel if it clears up before then

I have been using a new cotton wool ball each - feel so sorry for the poor pet. He is now hardly opening the eye at all. How long does it usually take to clear up?

Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in pint of boiling water then cool. Wipe from inside corner out and use a fresh piece of cotton wool.I would go to the doctors ifm it doesn't clear up in a few days though.

both my twins had this problem. You need loads of cotton wool. Never use the same cotton wool twice, even if you wipe just a small bit of the eye. Wipe from the corner of the eye to the outside part nearest to the ear. Just one wipe each time and then chuck the cotton wool.

I used to use cooled boiled water with a pinch of salt.

All you have to remember is loads of washing of your own hands and bucket fulls of cotton wool. Good luck
