Suddenly loads of mouth ulcers

LaMadrilena · 23/06/2023 21:15

For the last few days I've had a load of ulcers on my tongue. They're all over, both sides and front and back, and I'm still getting new ones by the day. I'm actually starting to struggle to eat and talk as I'm so sore.

No recent dental work or problems, no changes of health or diet, apart from trying to eat a bit better due to constant indigestion. No other health issues.

Any ideas what it could be due to? I've got a GPs appointment in a week for the indigestion.

I had this three years ago, and saw a consultant specialist who advised a reaction to a chemical that is in most toothpastes. He told me from now on to only use Sensodyne Pronamel range. Never had an issue again. Worth a try?

saltedcrispslove · 23/06/2023 21:20

Do you feel otherwise well? Could it be hand foot and mouth? I had loads of ulcers with this, but also felt unwell.

If not ulcers can occurs when you are generally a bit run down

Augend23 · 23/06/2023 21:20

I get this if I am getting a cold sometimes, but that's been the case since I was a child so feels a bit different.

I have also once had an unpleasant reaction to some mouthwash which made my tongue swell up and be almost blistered.

Ilikewinter · 23/06/2023 21:23

Could try gargling with chlorhexadine mouthwash - its in corsodyl but if you go to somewhere like home bargains / savers etc you can buy the generic version ar half the price.

I had this with toothpaste, too. Turns out I am allergic to the pink gel ones.

Yup. This happened to me. Started looking for Sodium Laurel Sulphate and completely sorted it. Not all Sensodyne is SLS free.

cushcosh · 23/06/2023 21:29

Yes that's what the specialist said, he only alllowed me to buy from their Pronamel range as it's SLS-free.

Isheabastard · 23/06/2023 21:37

I suffer from ulcers a lot. I was advised to avoid sodium laurel sulphate in toothpaste as well.

I also find fizzy drinks and salty stuff make them worse. Crisps are the worst.

B12 deficiency or gluten intolerance

Hearti · 23/06/2023 21:50

Try going gluten free for a few weeks to rid the indigestion and ulcers. I get both of these symptoms if I eat wheat, rye, oats, barley. For me gluten inhibits my absorption of b12and iron, resulting in mouth ulcers. While the indigestion is a more immediate reaction to eating gluten.

Hmmm, I haven't changed toothpaste, but I'll definitely look at the ingredients and try a different one. I am a bit run down I suppose, more no more than other full time working mums with elderly parents!

I have a 2 year old so HFM isn't impossible, but she had it not long ago so I don't think it could be that again so soon...

I'll call in at the pharmacy tomorrow and see if they can recommend something.

Thanks everyone

Long shot but you're not taking letrozole are you? I was taking it to boost ovulation and had a horrible reaction where my lips swelled and my mouth was very painful and bleeding

LaMadrilena · 23/06/2023 22:21

Nope, only on 1 medication and I've been on it for years. It's got a list of possible side effects as long as your arm, but mouth ulcers aren't one of them!

I've been reading Davina McCall's Menopausing book tonight and it mentions mouth ulcers being one of the lesser known potential side effects of lower oestrogen during perimenopause and beyond. Depending on your age/circumstances I wonder if that could be relevant for you.

drumroll · 24/06/2023 00:03

This happened to me when I was young (probably about 12 the again at 15). I went to the pharmacist and I recall being given little tablets that dissolve on the ulcers. It's hurt a lot but my mouth and lips were covered in them . Couldn't even eat for the pain. I have no idea what caused them but the tablets worked .

PlainOldEmmaJane · 24/06/2023 09:44

Hopefully it’s something simple, maybe you are a bit run down, or have a vitamin or mineral deficiency. I just wanted to mention though that mouth ulcers can be a sign/symptom of Crohn’s disease, and in view of your indigestion symptoms too it might be worth asking you gp if that might be a possibility when you see them next week.

Justputitdown · 24/06/2023 10:47

I had this and it was eruptive lingual papillitis. Could it be that?
